Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Philly bike/fixed gear events?

Moving to Philly in less than 3 weeks and was wondering what events are held weekly or monthly, if any, besides Critical Mass? In Seattle there are a couple rides going on every week, some fixed gear oriented and others not, but the options are nice. Does Philly have anything similar to this? Besides the insane traffic in comparison to Seattle, I'm looking forward to riding there!

-On a side note: What gear ratio's are some of you guys using?

Not sure, but I was on vacation and stayed there for a night and the streets were bustling with fixies at 2 am, something I'm not used to!

PRETZEL RIDES

let me explain. Here in philly, pretzels are important. There is a factory (philly soft pretzel factory) that makes all the pretzels for the city and they are amazing. Absolutly amazing. The factory has insane hours however, so to get them fresh (apposed to the afternoon at another store selling them) you need to get them when they first open, which happens to be 1am. (sometimes 3am.)

Because of this, every Tuesday a bunch of people gather at the art museum and go on a ride on over, en masse.

long story short: get philly pretzel fresh. The factory is at about 8th and washington sts.

48/17 is pretty ideal and gives you numerous skid patches if you're still into skidding.

pretzel ride has become pretty obnoxious just as critical mass is, but if you're just looking to ride in a group it should fulfill your needs. there's also water street sessions if you like calling what your doing a "session" which seems pretty fun for the trix kidz... just don't drive there with your bike in your trunk.

yeah come over to phillyfixed... we aren't really organized like some other cities... we don't put out movies, or shoes, or "hawt collabos". we pretty much are just real friends that all like bikes.

im riding a 46x17 but was thinking about going a little higher since the terrain there is flat in comparison to seattle. sounds like there is a lot of stuff to do out there, im looking forward to it.

Bike Philly
September 13, 2009

Admittedly not free, and its only like 10-20 miles for the car-free part, but it sounds kinda fun.

I don't think many people could do a century on a fixed.
