Wheels

I am looking into getting new wheels for my fixed gear. what wheels would you suggest that will NOT brake the bank!

Samwiches 07-14-09 12:56 PM

Weinmann DP18 on any hub. Strong, cheap.

Retem 07-14-09 01:43 PM

dp-18 or if you like low section rims alex r-450 formula sets are cheap and damn good

i am yet to meet a mechanic that recommends weinmanns, or say anything good about them.

nice to meet you.... actually your name is hateful and homophobic. not so nice to meet you after all...

but on topic, the dp18s will do fine if they are within your budget.

yeah there are quite a few skilled mechanic types on here

IRO has sold some nice cost-effective wheels in the past.

I don't know if they still do.

holy **** ken cox I thought you imploded years ago

I'd recommend Mavic CXP22's from Bicycle Wheel Warehouse, about $140+shipping.

Check out this thread comparing the Weinmans to the CXP22.

Opinions seem to be cyclical around here. This is an old thread from when Weinmans were apparently out of favor.

lighter than the Weinmanns, cheaper too I bet.

benjamin831 07-14-09 04:02 PM

lol, the Weinmanns heavy and poorly constructed. Stick to Mavics.

The IRO wheels are great for their price, unless you hit a curb real hard when you lose control going down hill, but i'd like to see any wheel survive that.

I've got weinmanns, and love them.
A guy from a LBS said they're "not worth riding". He doesn't know that i'm used to riding out-of-true budget '80s wheelsets, so the weinmanns are a revelation. It's all relative. if you're okay with not having the top stuff, they're an honest wheelset.

I prefer mavics I like eyeletted wheels to,
but I am hard on wheels, currently it is 3 open pros and 1 105 wheel.

Alex DA28s. A lot of messengers around here ride them because they are inexpensive and really strong and I've had a couple mechanics recommend them as well.

Mavic Open Pros are supposed to be quite nice as well
