Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Noobity: building SS

so i am a bike noob w/ minimal knowledge of mechanics. i plan to develop such by either taking apart and rebuilding bikes, or building a single speed.

i have 2 road bikes and really want a singlespeed.

so, for under 300 should i buy a single speed or build one?

what say you to this? https://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-09-ROAD-BICY...d=p3286.c0.m14

https://cgi.ebay.com/54cm-TRACK-FIXED...d=p3286.c0.m14

i have already looked at BD.

i know a lot of websites get bike hate.

should i buy a frame and start there?

those cranks and brakes are nearly worthless.

you can't build something for less.

this is bound to turn into a bikesdirect argument, but i say go for a nicer bike like the motobecane messenger. it has better brakes.

theres a chance that your 2 road bikes might be a better frame then those. The wheels are junk on both of those.

abstractform20,

If you decide to build a bike to learn I'd suggest taking the finished product to your LBS for a thorough "once over". This way, you get the experience of doing it and the feedback of a professional. Plus, you'll be 100% sure the bike is safe.

i was thinking of getting an older road bike off craigslist for around 150 or less and then getting a good tool kit for around 100-150.

i dont want to go over 300 for several reasons

-in school, work part time, will most likely ride 2-3 times a week

Post a photo of a bike you would convert. Getting a new good track wheel set would be a much better purchass then those junk bikes listed.

if u want SS, just get a SS conversion set, super cheap and it's easy to go back to geared if you want. No need to buy new wheels if you have 2 bikes already. Many MTB'ers will do this type of conversion for days they want to ride single speed.

Something like this.

Or this maybe better as you can adjust the location of the rear cog better.

And then you can get a chain tensioner

or to be even cheaper, you can get an all-in-one set for $39.
