Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Well, i got a used frame for cheap with some shimano 105 integrated shifters. the front shifter works fine, but the rear wasn't working. tried a paint thinner soak incase it was just gunked, but that wasn't working. Decided I had nothing to lose, so I took it apart.

what a PITA. I don't think it's still back together correctly. I have the lever moving now, but there's no ratcheting noise. shoot me in the face please, it'll be more pleasant than those

oh, and in before "buy campy/sram, it's rebuildable" I have sram on my forrealz bike

Maybe the mechanics forum would be a good place for this post.

I got into an ultegra 9 sped shifter last night. It's kinda crazy the amount of mechanics. I should be able to get it back together.

I used to think brifters were terribly overpriced until I took one apart.

hmm, not to my knowledge, no.

i did some google searching and it seems that everyone takes apart ultegra shifters, nobody takes apart these 5500 105's. I think i more or less got everything back in order, but I have one greasy spring that I can't figure out the location of for the life of me.

yes they really are complicated. I don't think I would ever mess with taking one apart. I learned how to install derailers and tension them properly and set the limiter screws the other day, and even that's slightly complicated.
