Hey All,

I need some advice. This is my Redline 925. It is stripped down, but mostly stock. I have beat the hell out of it for the last few years. It looks like I am about to run into cash, and want to throw some money into upgrades. I eventually want to switch out everything, including the frame (want a smaller wheel base). My thought was to go in this order with upgrades:

(1) BB
(2) Cranks / chain ring
(3) Wheel set
(4) Headset

First, is this a sensible order? Second, any specific suggestions for upgrades? I am not looking for super high-end upgrades, BTW.

It sounds like you should be looking for a completely new bike, rather than replacing everything individually. Is this not an option for some reason? If not, are you planning on transferring all your upgrades over to the new frame you'll eventually buy? Do you have a frame picked out already?

Yeah, it is not an option because I don't have the $ to drop on a totally set-up. If I did, I would. As for frames, right now I am eyeing a Mark V or Pista, as them seem to have some of the shortest wheel bases, and don't cost zillions of dollars (i.e. Cinelli et all). As for transferring upgrades, I'll transfere what is still in decent condition once I eventually get to the frame.

BB and Headset are some of the last things I'd upgrade. Both do their job admirably, until they need to be replaced. It's damned near impossible to tell the difference between a high end Chris King headset and a cheap Tange when riding. If the contact points (handlebars, seat, pedals) are good, then maybe a wheelset upgrade, but don't expect anything astounding out of it.

save your pennies. sell the 925 stock. purchase new bike.

That's it, spend the upgrade money on gin! I'm a big fan of Hendrick's, although Bombay Sapphire is a close second.

The BB and Headset are the least likely to be transferable to a new bike unless you buy something with the same threadings and bottom bracket length which seems like a very big limitation of a new bike, so if they ain't broke, don't fix them.

I just bought a 925 and so far I've replaced the seat, bars and pedals and have no desire to replace anything else but if were to do something, it would be something that would lighten it up which would probably be the wheel set. Plus this would be transferable to a new bike. Get one of the lighter Velocity wheel sets with Formulas or nicer hubs and keep the old Alex or whatever the stock rims were for when you sell the bike.

I just bought a 925 today. It's the first time I've ever owned a road bike, period. I like it so far.

I purchased the 44 cm frame. I wish I would have purchased the 48 cm frame, because the wheelbase is longer on the 48. My toes hit the front tire on some turns with the wheelbase of the 44. The wheelbase of the 48 is about 1.7cm longer. I'd like that. I'm 5'7" tall, and can fit either bike after doing some adjustments.

I noticed some other brands have shorter wheelbases, but they also have shorter chainstays.

Do any of you hit your front tires with your toes sometimes?
