Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

My SingleSpeed vs. my Cannondale CAAD9

Has anyone owned both a SS as well as a decent road bike with gears and was terribly dissapointed with the geared bike? I feel like im much faster on the SS

haha yeah, when I first got my FG bike built up I didn't ride my geared bike for a while. But, after the novelty wore off, I started riding my geared bike again. Now I ride them both equally, just for different purposes. But yeah, a SS can force you to crank a little harder up hills and stuff. The key to geared bikes is just to not be lazy w/ your gearing.

I have both (actually a fixed, single, and geared), and I can't say I'm disappointed in my geared bike nor am I slower.

I don't use my single speed or fixed for long distance group rides like I do my geared though, both have their places.

Are you disappointed with your CAAD9?
I'm certainly not disappointed with my CAAD8. I love it. Also love my Kilo TT. and Cross Check and 29er. Basically, I love all my bikes. I like going on road rides, I like going on mtb rides, I use my xcheck for commuting/work, I use my fixed gear for fun/commuting when I don't need my rack/etc.
Did you think you'd get into road riding and then not like it or something? Riding geared versus ssfg is different, for both quantifiable reasons and perceived ones.
What is your SS bike? If it has similar geometry and components to the CAAD9 (though I can't imagine that unless you somehow converted a high quality aluminum road bike to ss) I can see there being not a huge difference in their rides if you're not doing much climbing, but otherwise I'd say they're different and which one "feels" faster depends on what you like better and what you're using it for.

Interesting thread..... I was actually thinking of finding old caad9 frame to convert to SS. It wouldn't replace my geared synapse! as it has it's place. Just looking to step up my SS game. I don't want track Caad10 or any track. Just good road race geometry and 1 speed with a straight chainline. If I am going to dump money into say a Wabi lightning. $1150 why not build a Caad9 with a tennsioner pully?

atm I am on Dawes SST AL 48x17 freewheel.
42 miles
+ 1165 / - 1162
Max Speed: 27.3 mph
Avg. Speed: 16.7 mph

Those numbers are right in there with the alloy synapse. not really faster or slower. But I am left with far less fuel in the tank after the ss riding.

I just think that a caad9 SS would be much more fun than the dawes. As I ride freewheel and road anyways this opens up a much better wheelset selection for me.

Honestly, I don't care what you do. I'm just letting you know in case you were wondering why no one replied to you. But I'm guessing you don't care as it took you 6 months to reply to my reply.
