Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Pain in the back of my knee

So yesterday i went out on a quick 20 mile ride on my road bike. It was all flat since i road on a bike path and i was in a relatively steep gear the whole time. Maybe an hour after I got home i got on my fixed gear to ride to the store to get some food and i felt this painful tightness behind my knee, like i'd pulled a muscle.

I've been riding the road bike for a few months and have never had any problems, though i did notice recently i needed to raise the seat a bit, but i didnt do that until today.

My one theory as to why the pain was caused was this was my first ride over 10 miles with road shoes/pedals. Towards mile 17 or so, one of the screws on my cleats fell off and i had noticed just before that my foot was moving around an awful lot.

So if anyone who has a better knowledge of road cleat adjustment and placement and how that could cause injuries, please shed some light.

You said you raised your seatpost before this ride, and after the ride you had a pain behind your knee.

It sounds like you raised your seatpost too high.

oh, sorry for the confusion, i raised the seatpost after. I haven't had a chance to dial it in since i raised it since it kind of hurts to ride right now, i just roughed it, i'll do that after my knee stops hurting. Probably go into the LBS on Tuesday when i don't have work.

Too high seat post is generally shown through back pain, not knee. Knee pain GENERALLY comes from too low seat post or off cleat adjustment. But everyone is different so I'm clueless.

Could your raising of your seat post pushed you too far back straining your knees? If that is the case you might look at adjusting seat position.

*edit* simultaneous post = useless post

Too low seat post = knee pain.

the way I always understood it, and suffered from it, is:
the SAME pain in the FRONT of both knees means seat too low.
the SAME pain in the BACK of both knees means seat too hight.
but this only affects me on Centuries, or other really long rides. Maybe 20 would be enough...
