I think he just means it has horizontal dropouts - i.e. the length from the bottom bracket to the rear axle can be 'adjusted' by the length of the dropout slots.

Black Sheep had one at the recent RMBS.
Similar to this, but much cleaner & nicer looking. It was on a Black Sheep, after all.

That seems like an absolutely terrible idea. Like seriously one of the worst concepts one could conceive of.

This is a tensioner, which adjusts the chain, behind the horizontal dropouts. Is this what the guy means, perhaps?

He probably means the bike has sliding drops.

EDIT: I just looked at the ad and it looks like that frame has verticals. The chain is pretty slack so I'm wagering there's nothing there for tensioning unless he's using an eccentric bottom bracket.

Bfssfg member and all around winner @ life lyledriver helped make a bike with adjustable stays.

Blog post: https://projekto-b.blogspot.com/2009/...xperience.html

Prototype Naked turnbuckle chain stays, so you can run a disc brake without sliding tabs.

Here they are built up

Here is the semi-complete bike, getting ready for interbike.

would be even better if it had raised chainstays, no need for that joint in the frame.

Thank you for this - I admit I have never seen an adjustable chainstay before in my life. And I can see a couple of advantages it has, even compared to eccentric BBs (which, IMHO, are the best way to tension a chain - or were, until I saw this adjustable chainstay).

Do you have a pic of that Black Sheep bike? By the way, I am looking at their other models, and must say, Black Sheep really has some fresh ideas. At last!!!!!!

I don't know if I'd trust that little 1/8" bolt to handle the forces a chainstay is subjected to.

The two allen bolts on the bigger part of the stay look like they might be a seat post clamp sort of deal.

I agree. And we know that seat post clamps with only a single bolt support quite a heavy rider at times, without any problems. I submit to you that a single chainstay is subjected to compressive stresses of comparable or even less intensity.
