do 31t 94mm non ramped chainrings exist???
okay so I realize that they in fact DO exist, however a non-ramped 31t 94mm 5 bolt chainring should not cost me 45 dollars..... thats an injustice.....
should I just convert to bmx cranks so I can have a more broad selection of chainrings??? trying to find a 31t is driving me nuts....and its not like its for anything other than experimentation.....I have a fair amount of slack on my halflink 32t set up and was hoping one tooth less and a regular chain link would give me that perfect chainlength.........frustrating....

if its just for experimentation then whats the big deal with getting the considerably cheaper ramped chainring?
i run a ramped 32T 94mmBCD on my SS MTB and have never had a single problem with dropping the chain.

I have no problem running a ramped one, matter of fact if I could only find one I would buy it without second thought. however finding one is becoming quite the problem. Its almost becoming one of those obsessive compulsive kinda things, almost scary.

www.bikeman.com has a lot of 94mm BCD....i dunno if they have 31T though....

nothing there but it is getting more and more tempting to settle for a 30T and call it a day.

slightly off subject, with a 30/14 combination I would have 55.7 gear inches, most of what I have seen here is significantly higher, is that just the road contingency or am I just a wiener?

the 30T with the half link in place might work as well as a 31T w/out the halflink.
55.7 seems pretty low to me for road riding, unless you live in a very hilly area...

on my SS MTB i run a 32:16. i went to sheldons gear calculator, its 51.5 gear inches. this is a very easy gear, i take it up pretty large hills. after you ride the 55 gear inches for a while you may want to think about stepping it up a bit, but from what i gathered, youll have to guess what tooth chainring will work to get you the tension you need, and thats a pain in the ass. good luck!

See if you can run a 35 on the front, you can find one of those for cheap right? 35-14 gives you 67.5 inches (on a 700c bike) which is damn near perfect for riding on roads and nice smooth dirt. Ride it, get a good feel for it and change as necessary. I don't think you want to run anything as low as 31-14 or 30-14 unless you feel the need go to up and down really steep hills.
The general rule as per Shedon Brown (and it's worked for me) is that your total tooth count can go up or down 4 teeth and everything will still fit. So if 31-14 (45 teeth) fits then most any tooth combination of 37-41-45-49-53-57 teeth will fit.
Playing with gear ratios on a bike with vertical drops is so much fun.

definately tons of fun, but I must say, this is my mtb, though I can't say I have found any trails here yet, and going for a nice commuting gear may be the route to go. maybe its time to put the project on the backburner and find a road bike for a commuter.
