anyone run brakes on a non machined wheel?

i wanna get some b43's which are non machined but wanna keep a front emergency brake, i dont wanna use regular rubber pads, so i was wondering if using cork brake pads on a non machined aluminum rim would work or if it would even fit my brakes at all

here are the cork pads:

https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Dura-Ace...d=p3286.c0.m14

here are the pads i have now:

You will stop fine with either pads. I ran front brake on a non machined rim for a while and it was fine and dandy.

will the cork pads leave residue on the rim like the black ones do?

If it is an emergency brake only, I would not be too worried about what material the pads are. You are going to worry about more in an emergency than whether or not your non-machined wheel came out unscathed from the brake pads.

cork pads are for carbon rims... they don't work well with other materials, in fact they don't really work that well with carbon rims either.
since they're going to be emergency brakes, why don't you just use some koolstop salmon or swisstop yellow pads?

either that or use a disc brake.

I've got a set of old black anodized Mavics that have mostly shiny braking surfaces now due to the brakes.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Having worn sidewalls marks you as somebody who actually rides his bikes and is not simply another fixie poseur.

brakes on non-machines = ugly black marks on the rim and strange squealing noises when you brake. amusing your riding fixed and not single and its an emergency brake you could be okay, otherwise I would advise against it.

So? Why don't you ride a unicycle with a bag over your head - certainly not everyone can do that.

This is a fixed gear forum. You don't "run" anything here. Parts are to be "rocked."

not trying to be rude or anything, but serious questions: what is so good about the koolstop salmon or swisstop yellow pads? i keep hearing about them, but still no clue.

if i get regualr brakes could i just use goo-gone to get the black streak off? anyone have first had experience with that? on a powder coated rim

also with the yellow and black swisstops do either leave a significant mark when u brake? like cheap rubber pads will do? one site says "low wear rate" so i assume it wont mark it up as much. just want to make sure, if anything would the yellow swisstops leave a yellow mark? are there white brake pads out there that will leave a white mark?

Machined rims are a recent innovation, done to reduce pad squeal; nothing more. People used brakes on non-machined rims for decades before machining became fashionable. I have several non-machined wheel sets that are over 25 years old and have no problems with using brakes on them.

Companies have a lot of flexibility in changing the compound for durability, traction, and cost. Both brands are respected for stopping particularly well. I don't know how traction would be on a non machined surface, but I would definitely recommend a machined/ polished surface so that any marks you leave could me cleaned up more easily.

It would suck to have a black streak around brightly colored rim/tire combo. I'm not sure how velocity finishes their wheels either, intense emergency braking might scrape/wear the finish off.

softer compound that doesn't eat up your rims as bad as hard black rubber pads.
also leaves a salmon or yellow streak instead of a black one.

key thing is they're softer.

Dude, they're rims. Who really cares if they get marked up from use?

You people are seriously weird.

I have a front brake on my non-machined black anodized Deep V's.

I've only ever heard the squealing sound with powdercoated wheels, not anodized.

In either case, though, the brakes leave a mark.

I have a ring running along my wheel from the brake.

And Jim-Bob is right, just ride the damn thing.

if your rims are anodized you can use chromium pads, which are the green ones.

velocity uses powder coating or anodizing depending on the colour.

People pay an extra $100 so they can get a rim that they think is "pretty enough" for their needs. If looks didn't matter rims would only come in one color, Velocity offers 55 color possibilities for rims.

Besides, I'm talking about making a choice so that you don't have to worry about the looks as much. I understand not taking it easy on a bike because you're afraid of scratching the paint, but it's possible to make choices so that the bike will look good regardless of how you use it.

Velocity's really done a good job milking you guys that care about "colorways", I've gotta hand it to them for that. But seriously, before the sneaker kids discovered fixed gears, we were perfectly happy with "silver" and "kinda grayish" rims.

Progress marches on, I suppose.
