Metal toe clips. I didnt like my plastic ones, they were really uncomfortable. But Im actually not enjoying the metal ones either. I want the Soma gate clips, you can use them for double straps and look really comfortable.

I use allcity steel double gate/strap clips. I was riding generic plastic ones, but when I upgraded pedals (so that I could throw on an extra set of straps, as my old pedals wouldn't take 2 straps) I realized that I needed the second strap thingy on the clip because I use nylon straps (pake, they're great!) and they didn't have a "doubler" and I didn't want to make one...

plastic. they flex instead of snapping... um they're cheap and durable too.

How many metals clips have you snapped? What brand? What circumstance?

You don't want flex in a clip. You want as close & constant a connection to the pedal as possible. Hence the invention of clipless pedals, the next level.

Heavy metal not pop plastic. Do yourself a favour & give them leather straps not flexy nylon. The difference in straps is just as important. Leather is snug & holds it's shape. So much easier to get in & out of than trying to toe up your cheapo plastic straps to get your foot under it because they sag.

Money is better spent on the clips & straps first than the pedals. To a large extent on the road, a platform is a platform. Get concerned about what keeps you connected to the platform.

i have snapped 2 sets of the soma double gate pedal. the first set lasted about 2.5 months, then both clips snapped. the second set didn't even last a month- it was a warranty set my LBS gave me. honestly, the design is horrible- it has snaped at the rivet every time. the rivet is in a high stress area, leaving very little material to support the loads placed on it. I do ride CX on my SS, and have since switched to clipless to avoid any more headaches.

if i do go back to clips and straps on my commuter, i will go plastic or maybe with the all city clips. they seem to have more support than the somas.

More s##t flies around about soma clips than it does from a towel in Trainspotting. Don't use them as a benchmark for metal clips.

MKS, NJS standard. $15.00. No questions need be asked.

I've snapped two MKS clips (at the rivet) and know a friend who snapped one also.

Right...sooo....I'll just mill about here until nobody notices I...slip out the service entrance.

After snapping 2 of anything I change systems. Go clipless.

The clip isn't what hold you're foot in place the strap is. The clip just hold the strap so you can easily get your foot in and provides a guide for positioning it until you tighten the strap.

How are those Allcity clips? You have the ones that are double gated right, with two slots for two straps? I was just about to buy them online, how they working out for you?

I agree about the Pake straps, they are aweomse, I use em too.

I think both get the job done. My metal clips make me feel more attached to the bike. The plastic ones are more comfortable and pliable.

Metal for my street bike
Plastic for my mountain bike.

As they are now, on my street bike they scrape around corners when I ride the bottoms of the pedals. If my pedals were any closer to the ground, I'd go plastic.

The biggest difference is material. One is made out of metal, and the other plastic.

Metal clips look prettier, that's the main difference.

I've been using MKS clips for the last 6 months, but I've had others before. They actually scratch up my shoes less. The plastic ones I've used end up with a lot of edges and burrs.

I agree with an earlier comment that plastic is nice for MTB. For road, its metal for me.

I use plastic b/c they don't make a horrible sound whenever they drag on the ground. If you have a bike w/ a low-ish BB, you might want to consider getting plastic clips instead of metal ones.

I use metal clips because I have toe overlap with the plastic ones. No toe overlap with the metal ones makes for better city riding imho. But if I had a bike that had no problems with toe overlap with the plastic ones, I probably would not have changed them.

Plastic don't make a nasty noise when they scrape on the ground.
It is the strap and sole which holds your foot to the pedal anyway, so I use plastic. They last a long time and don't rust.

Clipless is the best option when you really want to be connected to the pedals, but clips are great for riding around town with whatever shoes you have on.

The allcity clips are really comfortable. And the double strap slots take away so much of the stress on my feet from skidding (I've broken the skin on my feet in certain places with other clips after day-long alleycats). And with the pake straps, the whole pedal system feels snug and strong.

My thoughts would be a metal clip would bend or snap before a plastic one did. Unless it was cheap plastic that is too brittle for its purpose. But from my experience, it's much easier to reach the yield point with a metal that thin than a polymer. It really just depends on its properties. But, I'm sure there are good brands out there that try to prevent this from happening in both Plastic and Metal.

Thats the exact problem Im having too. I wasnt skidding too much till recently and my MKS clips with the two straps are hurting my feet super bad and making them sore. DId you get yours online? Im trying to to find out where I can buy them.

Clips are wear items. They break.

I've broken my share of MKS Steel clips.
