Yes but can you skid it?

ADSR 10-17-09 09:42 AM

That's certainly pretty neat. I wonder how many of us would even find a use for it outside of a cool toy. I bet those are the best splined cogs/interface in the world though. They'd better be for that price.

White Industries cogs/interface.

ADSR 10-17-09 09:54 AM

Aww, they didn't even make their own? I was hoping for something machined to insane tolerances.

they are. I have two splined White Ind. hubs.

hairnet 10-17-09 10:14 AM

So what does it do?

Heck 99% of the roadies here who have one can ultimately only claim it as a cool toy. Not like there are too many cat1/2 or pro riders farting around here.

I'm sure it's great and very high quality, but I was hoping for unnecessary. Oh well. How do you like your white industries hubs? Splined interfaces seem like such a good idea, but we fear change.

Power meters measure power. Power is a measurement of work/time. Most cyclist powermeters express power in terms of watts, which is one joule (a unit of energy) per second. About 745 watts is one horsepower.

Cyclists use power meters to train in specific areas of exertion. They're replaced heart rate monitors as a way to accurately test physiological performance.

I don't completely understand how a splined interface wouldn't eventually develop play, nor why it's even necessary given that there isn't any deficiency with a typical threaded cog design. Anyone who knows better care to enlighten me?

letsgetsandy 10-17-09 12:25 PM

Yawn

I think a lockring holding the cog down prevents it from being able to make those microscopic back-and-forth movements that will lead to wear and play. It's the same on cassettes, I suppose. I've seen freehub bodies that are worn and notched so deeply, but when the cassette is on there and the lockring is keeping everything pressed together, no play.

That said I suspect that despite this, my miche cog/carrier system has a wee bit of play, but I'm not sure that it's that and not carrier slipping from regular and repeated and sometimes hurried and perhaps careless gear changes and lockring removals and re-installs.

I think the disc hub cog system works better in my head as I can see it not developing play as fast as a splined system as the screws are hold the cog down and most disc hub screws have locktight around the threads just in case as well. Works great for my mtb. Could be totally wrong though.

Ill be picking one of these up real soon

I have not heard of any play developing in White's crank/spider interface, this is a larger version of that.
So far, both of mine are perfect.

jakerock 10-17-09 10:27 PM

Im totally throwing one of those on the kilo!

I really, really don't get this. **** that **** white industry cogs only? Why the hell didn't do they go with the standard threaded hub so we can use whatever phil/dura ace etc cogs we wanted?

Soil_Sampler 10-17-09 11:03 PM

?

ask them why?

are you really going to buy this? does it really matter? if you can afford this hub you can afford that cog. This is a training hub so you can use your favorite hub when racing.

White Ind can go lower (14t) than ISO/Disc Cogs (16t... maybe 15t if done right)

according to one gentleman on fixedgeargallery, the conversion is free.
