I wouldn't trust these for the rigors of fg riding, but for a ss they should hold up ok right? No machined sidewalls is an issue though. Since they look painted, I wonder how quickly the paint would wear off when used with brakes?

Why does everyone think you need something special for brakes to work? One company machines their sidewall for "improved braking" and all of the sudden people go "z0mg you might as well be trying to stop on a banana peel through an oil slick over an ice patch" if you have one of the few rims that aren't machined anymore

my 1993 open 4 rims beg to differ...they have been stopping just fine since a lot of the deep-v buyers were born (of course lots of brake use eventually "machines" the rim for you). Hell, they used to have steel rims with CHROME braking surfaces...yeah they sucked in the rain but they stopped with decent pads.

Honestly, i'd rather get the Vuelta Pro V at $150

https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1232

or even the cheaper Zerolite's for $110 w/ similiarly meh quando hubs as the ebay listing.

Agreed. However, those don't even have a flat surface for the brakes to make contact with, so until your pads wear down to the shape of the rims you'll be braking on the corners of the pads. That's all I was getting at. They have that H+Son "Not even compatible with brakes, so man up, f-got!" kind of shape.

They still run chrome plated rims on Bmx bikes. They work very well when then they are dry, but yeah they totally suck in the rain.

They are cheap, have tires and cogs, and cost as much as a single H+Son rim.

Damn, Worst that can happen is the cog threads strip on the rear hub. As long as you keep the spokes tensioned, it will stay true. Since when has weight been an issue for FG anyways?

And for the clincher/tubular debate roaring. Do you really think they will have tubulars on such a cheap deal? It is more likely they made a mistake in the details.

I think these are worth it. They look deep, which is popular and are stupid cheap. Is such a deep rim with 36 spokes going to be weak?

That has got to be the cheapest looking front hub I've seen in a loooooooong time. Like, everything I've found in the shop that looks like that is dated pre-1985. So, we're not talking like, 2009 cheap, but like, 1980 cheeeeeap. Wonder if that puts the wheels in perspective at all.

I emailed someone who bought a pair off ebay.

They said they seemed ok. He is putting them on his conversion. Although he said the paint on the rims was a bit scratched.

Also, they're 42mm deep. No wheel weights though.

Did some research, and apparently these rear hubs are the worst thing ever made in the world ever.

So whats the verdict on these rims? I wanted to pick up a set but now I'm debating if I should just save up and get velocity b43's.

I'm really confused on the popularity of the b43's. they are a poorly made copy of the h+son rims. They weigh in at an extra 150 grams each. That means the company put no time into actually researching how to make a better deep rim, they just made their already heavy deep v's deeper, and called the extra weight strength.

I have had h+son rims on my aluminum frame for 8 months, ridden up curbs, down curbs, across town on 30 psi, up mountain bike trails, with somebody on my handlebars, do whirly birds. The rims have handled everything I have thrown at them no problem. Perfectly true to this day with no spoke tensioning.

I bet you this rim is or the same quality of the b43's, probably a close weight, and if the hubs are that big a problem, you could buy a set of surely hubs and re-lace the wheels, and still only have paid $200. They sound like a pretty good deal on a cheap set of rims.

They're triple walled for durability. Weight, it seems is not a consideration of B43s.
