Drops; more positions and I personally think they look better than risers/ flats

It really depends on what I'm doing. I like risers in city traffic because I need a more upright riding position and they're really comfy if you're only going to use that riding position. Once I'm not in the city, I prefer drops. Hence, my fixed gear has risers and my road bike has drops. If I do any sort of long distance riding on the fixed gear, I put drops on it.

Drops with hoods. City traffic is still cool, I can see over most cars and and still have three different hand positions. Might try out some horns when I have the extra cash.

horns would be the same as drops and hoods with one less position. If you dont ride in drops its a good idea.

Yeah, I realize that. I don't use my drops <i>that</i> much so I was thinking about picking up horns to play with for a future build.

thats why i did it, but i had track drops so no hoods. I really like riding in hoods too.

road drops w/ hoods > bullhorns > road drops w/o hoods > * > risers > track drops

risers. that's all i have and have ever had, sooo, not much of an impartial opinion.

drops are equally good for climbing and descending, and put you in an aerodynamic position on the bike. the con of drops is that an aerodynamic position on the bike is not comfortable. even riding the tops of drops you're still in a pretty hunched over position.

risers don't provide as much leverage for climbing (depending on width, but they will still never be as good as drops), and put you in a more comfortable, slower, less aerodynamic position on the bike. risers will give you a comfortable ride but you'll see a big speed (and back pain) increase in using drops.

bullhorns give you a farther forward, and less hunched down position than riding the drops of drop bars. comfort, speed, and position-wise, in between drops and risers.

drops with hoods = drops and bullhorns put together.


so, in conclusion, the best handlebars for fixed-gear riding are

if by "hunched over" you mean that a position that is uncomfortable, then I'd say the bike is poorly fit. Riding on the tops and/or hoods should be comfortable and relatively effortless for miles -- that is, if the bicycle is properly fitted. If one feels hunched over, I'd guess the stem is too low or is too negative.

If you like a higher position you realize that you can get a stem that will put your drop bars higher.

+1, I like to be comfortable on my bike and like the two comfortable hand and braking positions of the drops, but I never ride in the drops and have been considering changing over to horns, but the look of drops give a nice bike that classic look.

I think its because they are the three most comfortable (to most) therefore popular types.

i back dirt drops.... (like the midge bar)
relatively upright position when set up correctly + you get multiple hand positions + works well on/off road

Flat bars w/MTB bar ends (stubby ones). Multiple hand positions, customizable width, and more compact than bullhorns. Been running bars like this for about five years. I swear by it.
