Does anyone know what clamp size I should be using with this? I know most road bars are 26.0 mm but they seem more narrow. Is it possible that they are 25.4mm? Thanks.

^^^haha exactly what I was thinking. Thanks ADSR, but I'm looking on eBay for a Thomson Elite stem, and most are actually 25.4. Should I use a shim? Will it make it any different?

Oops, not shims, sorry, I meant is there anything I can do to a 25.4 to make it a 26.0??

Aside from boring it out I can't think of anything. I'd just wait it out and get the correct sized stem. I promise you'll be happier in the long run.

If you have a 25.4 stem and 26.0 bars, a shim would not do any good. A shim only works when the bar is smaller than the clamp. I have 25.4 bars in my 26.0 stem (which is the opposite of your situation) and have never had any problems with it. I'm not sure how it would work vice versa (26.0 bar in a 25.4 clamp.

26 bar in 25.4 stem would work for steel bars if you're careful and don't over clamp. Riskier with Aluminum bars. Always better to go with components that fit. I'm actually getting a pricier 26.0 quill over a 25.4 one for my stratos 400. Small world.

you can actually fit a 26 in a 25.4. it fits just a tad snug,but if you think about it .6 of a mm is not that big.

Have you gotten Stratos into a quill stem before, or is this a new thing? If you've gotten it to work before I need to know how, because I had some Stratos for a little while, and had to get rid of them because they wouldn't fit into my Nitto stem. If it works I'm totally going to pick up some Stratos again.

I've fit a nitto rb-021 in a 25.4 quill before and didn't give it much thought. It was a pain to get it through but it worked. But you're right, the stratos might be too hard. The bends are a bit more than the nitto and may be just enough to make it impossible. This sucks because it ruins my plan for the new fork I wanted. I don't want to give up the stratos though. Did you try prying open the stem a bit for more clearance? I need to find a quill to test on.

you should invest in a negative shim. that's the easiest way to fit 26.0 bars into 25.4 stems.

For the record, there exists some quill stems with removable and/or hinged faceplates. The Deda Murex is the one that immediately comes to mind.

I don't think they make those in 60mm? Besides, I prefer the look of a 1 bolt classic quill. Don't plan on changing bars, just need to get them in!

My experience is that you will need the stem off the bike to get the bars on. It involves a lot of twisting of the bars through the bends and will probably result in some scratching of the bars. I've had my Strattos 200s on three or four different stems. If the stem can be pried open a bit, you should be fine. Some stems (like some old 3TTT) actually have a small screw that is used to expand the size of the clamp opening so you can get bars on without scratching them up. I have another 3TTT stem in which the clamp area was too wide to get around the bends on the bar. I haven't tried these bars with a modern/still in production quill stem. Use a little chain lube on the bars to help slide the stem up them.

Will do veganwar. Scratching the bars is no biggie since I'm wrapping them up completely anyway. Have something brewing so I'll report back in a week or so with success or failure.

i played hell trying to get 26.4 cinelli bars into a 26.0 stem. had to use a big flat-blade screwdriver to get enough spread. they fit, but f that. go find a used stem at a bike shop ($10).
