Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The Fixed Gears of University of Toronto Photo Thread [Large picture warning]

When I see a FG/SS and have a moment, I snap a photo with my phone.

If you see your bike and want it removed, let me know!

I was too lazy to resize these, so unfortunately they're all rather large, low-quality images thanks to my ****ty first-gen iPhone camera. This forum should have a [timg] tag like others! So useful.

That thing has been there for about a year. There's another old Raleigh hardtail that's stripped on the next O-ring down. Pisses me off because sometimes I need to lock up around there. I'm not sure what happens when the owners don't bother even getting their locks back. City doesn't notice, I guess.

Mostly singlespeeds I'm guessing?

My bad. I know my campus is mostly filled with some pretty ****ty bikes and pretty stupid riders. I've met some chill people at Bikechain though.

It kills me to see bikes locked up to those Toronto ring posts on the ring, not the centre post. You can snap the ring off with a two-by-four piece of wood. One trip to the lumber store and a walk across U of T campus, and I could expand my bicycle collection considerably.

really? they look more stable than that. if they were locked to the center post couldn't they just be lifted off it after you break the ring off anyway?

Not at U of T. I've never seen any of these bikes around. Probably don't leave campus much

It takes a fair bit of torque but no, those things snap off fairly easily if you angle it correctly. I never used them, even before their weaknesses
became a news story, it just seemed clear that the ring could be removed from the post with a tool or something. It must have been a very
crafty thief who figured out the 2X4 thing, I wonder how many bikes he got before people caught on?

tha majority of those look like single speeds with single brakes (lack of foot retention).

Although i suppose it's possible they ride fixed gear, no retention, with a brake.

yawn. don't look to poor students for quality bikes.

It didn't look like many of them were locked very well. 1 thief can swoop in and make a pretty penny with all those saddles and wheels!

that Rossin looks like it has a lugged seat cluster and bottom bracket, but tigged headtube. Is that common?

I thought you meant that the ring could literally be snapped in half. If it can just be removed/pried off, then shouldn't it be better that you lock it to the ring? Then the bike is still attached to something heavy even if the ring is removed. If it was locked to the center post and someone removed the ring, then the bike can just be lifted off and a thief only has a U-lock to carry away and worry about later, not a 10-20 pound metal ring as well.

No one knows how to lock up both wheels in TO? Or maybe wheel theft isn't a big problem?
