I have had the same experience ... Couple of new tubes (well known brand that I never used before) popped one after the other while inflating on a new install (same place, right by the valve). I had to chalk it up to bad manufacturing. Not that I am not an idiot.

It's because of the way tubes are manufactured. People are correct when they say this is due to user error; yes seams do occaaaasionally fail outright but that's rare and these seams are designed to be further away from the actual valve stem to give less room for leverage.. about a 1cm or so.

Also, nobody has mentioned yet that people blow out their tubes by over-inflating their tires as well.

Bikeforums is like one big three-year fad loop. Just saying

don't use the little nut on the valve. they are totally unnecessary and just adding like 5 grams to your bike. I say f*ck those 5 grams.

Do you guys think it would be okay if I patched the two areas around the valve and continued using the tube? Of course, after following all the good tire installation advice you guys are giving.

There's no reason not to try it. THe absolute worst that can happen is another flat if another hole opens on that seam, in which case i would then chuck the tube.

Also, i love the little valve nuts and get annoyed when they're missing.
