Sorry if this is a newbie question to ask, but need your input/advice. I have a 2007 Masi Speciale Fixed, which comes with stock Alexrims R500. I am interested in switching them out for Weinmann DP18 rims, and I am not sure how to go about this. Can you please recommend a site that I can get a good deal on em, in black? And do I just order the rims, or the wheelset laced with hubs? I saw a wheelset with an origin 8 hubs for $200. Any recos? Once I get the wheelset, I imagine I have to go to my local LBS to have them switched out, correct? Any help/advice would be appreciated!

ya you can get them for cheaper that 200. ebay is a good place to look. I also recommend wheel&sprocket (eighthinch.com). black shouldn't be a problem. you don't need a LBS to switch them out. you just need to take off your old wheels, take off the tires and tubes, put them on the new wheels and then put those wheels back on your bike. Changing tires is a skill you should acquire if you haven't already.

Are you wanting to take the alex rims off the new wheels and replace them with weinmanns? Somebody will have to rebuild the wheels. It'll probably cost you about as much to rebuild your wheels with different rims as to just buy another set of wheels. Just buy another set, or have another set of wheels built with all better parts. This way you can upgrade the hubs and spokes, too. Sell the old ones on eBay.

Here is an example of a website where you can "build" your own wheels by selecting all the components you prefer. Excel builds good stuff - I have a set of fixed gear wheels of theirs.

I agree that you should consider some other rims. DP18s are popular, but they're also super heavy. Look around some. If you can put up $200 or so for the wheelset you can do a lot better. https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com/ I also think that building wheels is quite fun and I'd pay more to get wheels in components as opposed to prebuilt. Do what you want, though.

I was thinking the same thing. Stick with the Alex's until you have enough money to get some wheels that are an actual improvement. The alex's are fine, no need to sidegrade, especially when you have no idea why you're buying new wheels in the first place. And please don't spend the $150 just for rad colorz brah.

Maybe the kid just likes the way deep section rims look and doesn't feel the need to shell out more money for Velocity or H+Sons. Even though I do ride my bike every day, I still consider myself a casual rider and the Weinmanns on my Kilo suit me just fine. In fact, I like them a lot.

I bought a $100 Thomson stem that was actually heavier than the one it replaced. Not the wisest purchase, but I wanted a Thomson on my new bike, so I got it.


Now I'm broke, and have to sell photo gear and Harley parts to pay for new bike stuff.

I hope it's OK if I hijack this thread, since everyone seems to have an opinion on wheels. Which of these would make a good budget winter wheelset?

Weinman/Origin8 for $147.99

Vuelta from Bikeisland $99.

Tec9/Quando/Asses for $125.

Weight is less important than strength, since they'll be rolling over bad roads covered in snow.

I totally understand what you're saying...I run Tessa's on my bike and I got them because I wanted them and they were cheap, nothing more. But I also needed a wheelset at the time, which put me in the market to even make that kind of purchase. If you have perfectly fine wheels and would spend $150 to get wheels that actually aren't any different besides color, then some intervention is necessary atmo. I mean, if you just want color so badly you're probably better off rattlecanning them.

Perhaps hub is more important than strength in this case. I'd get the Weinmans just for the sealed hubs, loose ball in yucky winter weather is just asking for hassle. All three rims will hold up fine on snow covered bumpy roads.

i just bought some new polished dp18's on ebay for just under 100 shipped. just wait around and you can grap them up for cheap.

The Tec9 are technically stronger for the simple fact that they are deeper. But they are really heavy.
the weinmans are strong too though, I have had 10s of friends ride them and never have an issue. And they will be quite a bit lighter.
