Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Akward pain in lower left glute

So yesterday, directly or a little after (don't remember which) riding over to my girl's place, I noticed a slight strain/pain in my lower left buttcheek. Only on the left and not the right. I shook it off, rode home later that night and decided I'd feel better in the morning. Instead the pain got worse and it's been hurting all day, especially when i get up from my chair or walk up stairs.

Now I do weight lift 4-5 times a week and do several strenuous work outs that include my upper and lower body. For example, I leg press 630 pounds. This on top of the stress associated with a 9-10 hour workday could be the reason for my current ailment. However, since I felt it after riding my bike, I can't help but think that it's somewhat associated with that.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? or could tell me what it might be?

yes i realize i spelled awkward wrong. let me have it.

Maybe you should lift less frequently and let yourself heal, assuming you do all the same exercises when you go to work out. I have no reason to think so, but maybe the seat is too high?

seat is too high
I've made sure the saddle is at the proper height for a proper fit. I've actually been OCD about it along with other things. (as many forum members can attest to). Also, it doesn't explain why it's only on one side.

Gonna have to agree with hairnet. I'm a weightlifter myself, although it's gone partially to the wayside since I started cycling almost exclusively as transportation, but you need more recovery time dude.

If I ride to work, I typically won't lift weights, and vice versa. Give yourself some time off the bike/gym a few days.

Sounds a lot like piriformis syndrome to me, but it could be a number of problems. Stay away from the weights for a while and see what happens.

^ wow that sounds really accurate. shoot I hope it's really not that though.

I've never been away from the gym for more than week since I was 16 and I've never had weightlifting related accidents so this is kinda weird for me.

Yea dude, life will throw you curveballs. Don't get too worried; I have a broken leg right now and I can only get to the gym once a week when it's not terribly busy. Imagine losing 15lbs of mass in 4 weeks.

Taking time off is really good for you; you'll come back stronger and more intense.

yeah yo I read your post about the leg injury. I'm sorry to hear about it and I hope you recover soon. I don't even wanna think about losing mass, makes me shudder.

leg press is a really unhealthy exercise. Especially if you're doing high weights like that. It's like when people say it's bad for your knees to run a high gear because it's high resistance and low cadence. Leg press is like that x1000. I know when I used to be a HS athlete our coaches made us do leg press, and that was the first time in my life I began to feel knee pain.

Then again, youre not experiencing knee pain, so it could be something else. But whenever I hear someone doing leg presses I just get a little sketched out.

Do you ride brakeless? Maybe it's the pulling up motion of your left foot whenever you skid...I donno

Well, maybe depending how many rep and sets you do. I typically do 8 slow reps and move on to whatever else.
