Campy 151 bcd Pista crank w/ Campagnolo Record Bottom Bracket 68 x 102 ??
 

~Salutations.

I've been reading bikeforums for a while now & just wanted to start by saying THANK YOU !!! (seriously, so many knowledgeable people here !!)

I have learned many many many useful bits of information (combined with Sheldon Brown's site), and i've solved many of my problems with only a desire to learn and a just little research ...
& without any of you even knowing that you helped !!!... invaluable ...!!

That being said, this is my first post ...

I recently bought an 80's schwinn madison track frame. The rear spacing is 120mm.

and I have a vintage Campy 170 Pista crankset that I want to use. The BCD is 151.
But when I bought it used, it came with a Strada 170 left arm instead.
Because the bcd is 151 im assuming that at least the right drive side is late 60's early 70's.

I also bought a Campagnolo Record 10sp. Bottom Bracket 68 x 102 ...

(I have the crankset, but I haven't gotten the frame or the BB yet, so I can't test)

I read that older campy pista stuff needs a 109 mm bb and newer stuff is 111mm.

Can I use the 102 BB with the Pista Crankset & strada left arm?
or will the chainring dig into the chainstay?

If it won't work, then ...

Do I need to get a 109 BB? or 111 bb?
and then just adjust the spacing to keep the chainline straight ...

And does the spindle need to be symmetrical, or can it be asymmetrical since the left arm is Strada, does the symmetry matter? i.e. Can it be a road bb, or does it need to be pista?
SPC (Strada, Pista, Record c) should work right?

You would be best off with a symmetrical 111 BB-- which should not be too difficult to find. The 102 will most likely dig into your chainstay, and symmetry does matter, as the drive side will be longer (screwing up your chainline). Your Strada arm is just a red herring in the equation. It might have a different Q-factor, but you probably don't want to sort through all that right now. I would be shocked if your 102 actually works in your case.

You can use the newer Record track 111mm symmetrical bottom bracket and get away with it, but the post-1994 Campagnolo bottom brackets have an ISO taper. Older Campy BB's actually had a proprietary taper (somewhere in between ISO and JIS, but actually closer to JIS). So, if you install your 60s-70s Record Pista cranks on a newer ISO 111mm Record Pista bottom bracket, you might have some chainline issues. Plus, you might end up changing the shape of the square taper on the cranks themselves.

If I were you I would search for an original 68-P-120 Campagnolo Record Pista bottom bracket. Or get a Phil Wood.

Sorry this is off subject but did you get the bike from velo-cult? they're a rad shop. I got my frame from there. Sky is pretty cool and the guys that work there are pretty nice too (well most, the dude with the septum piercing kind of a prick but....).

There's no difference between the Stada and Pista left arms (as long as they are the same length).

The modern 10 spd 102 BB will not work. I've used the modern 109 pista BB's with the older style cranks and that has worked out ok, accept when the tapers on the cranks are very worn (which they usually are on 151's that have been around for a long time). Then they will pull on too far and the chainline will be bad.

A modern Veloce cartridge BB for a triple comes in a 111 length and can be bought for a lot less than a vintage Record Pista set. I bought some ACS versions last year for about $15 online, but I'm not sure if they are still around that cheap.

Check over your 151 right arm for cracks in the taper or starting around the spider at the arm. It's very common for them to be cracked. If you are going to ride brakeless it might not live long if any cracks have started.

Good to know. The campy 102 bb I already bought was only $35 so I'll just use it on a different build.
This is the option I'm going to go with ... the O.G. 68-P-120 campy pista bb ... I was trying to save some money, but that's what the crank was made for, so why mess with a perfect match ...

yes I did, but I won the auction on ebay so I haven't had the chance to actually meet them,
but if I ever find myself out in SD i'll swing by the shop. They have a great blog ... and i'm really considering having La Suprema (ed's bikes) do a custom build for me ... really nice stuff coming out of that shop ... very creative with a nod to golden age (1890's)

p.s. for some good turn of the century fixie photos, go to the library of congress image data base and/or new york public library and search bicycle for instance

Thanks, the tapers look good, and NO SIGNS of cracks!!! I've been riding brakeless for over a year,, it wasn't intentional. I didn't have a brake, so I flipped over the wheel and just never went back ...
I don't ride to crazy, & I really don't want to put a front break on there but i've really been considering it due to safety issues ...

My friend got hit not too long ago ((hit and run)) and they had to remove a piece of his skull and put it in his stomach for over a month ... he was in a coma,,, head staples ,,, tubes everywhere...
it really scared the sh*t out of me, but he rides with cassettes, and has front and back breaks, and reflectors ... so ... I don't know, sometimes if your gonna get hit ... your gonna get hit.

The brake is kind of like "I know its there so I feel safe"
but I ride 200x's safer than some people I see who wear helmets and have brakes ...
but that's probably why ... I have to be super aware because of those 2 reasons.

But then again ... theres always a chance that if I have a brake, it could really make a difference ...
I just don't want to get dependent on it ...
9/10 I have avoided accidents by manuvering instead of stopping ... where a brake might have actually caused a collision if used.

I see it both ways. and i get sh*t all the time for not having it ...
