Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Best chainring bolts and brake levers?

Sup conversion-heads. I'm excited for my conversion coming up, but have three q's:

1. What is the correct length of the chainring bolt that will go into my single-speed conversion?

2. I'd like to replace my vintage Universal road brake levers and put on some cross-bar cyclocross style levers. I know Sheldon recommends Cane Creek, but they seem expensive to me. What are your recommendations for good levers on a budget? Would normal BMX levers work?

3. Would modern levers work on my vintage Universal center-pull calipers?

chainring bolts are usually sold according to how many chainrings your using, so in your case you need single ring chainring bolts. i like bmx levers with the allen bolt hinges so you can take them off to change bars easier, but its up to you. just check the diameter on the handlebars your using and on the brake levers you want. and yeah modern levers will work with any caliper. worst case you have to get a new cable to make it work, but there should be no issue there.

Great -- thanks. Hey Matt, I see you are from Walnut Creek. I am from Fairfield, just up 680.
