In the DC area it isn't uncommon for cyclists to buy obviously stolen bikes off the crackheads for like $20 then to post ads stating the original owner can have the bike back for the $20 the good Samaritan is out of pocket [and a description of course]. It seemed weird to me when I first got here but I guess if one of my bikes was stolen it would be worth a few bucks to get it back.. I'm not saying that is what's going on here, nor am I endorsing the morality of the practice but that was my thought from reading it.

this doesn't seem unusual if you live in a city where there is a lot of bike theft. i bought a $2000 road bike of some crackhead for $40 bucks because it was obviously stolen, and eventually found the owner and returned it for the same $40. the dude offered me extra but i didn't take it. i would be willing to pay/do the same thing if someone found my stolen bike and made an effort to find me.

You don't live in a big city do you? Tweakers have the strength of 10 men and are unpredictable; not the kind of thing you want to mess around with.

They don't have any more strength than we do. But when you're on drugs, you have a tendency to not notice the pain, which is what allows them to do really stupid(er) things.

That's exactly correct. That's why you don't want to get into a fight with a drunk man. He will commit completely to that one strike or slash (if he has a knife of broken bottle in his hand), than a normal person would.

If he has a weapon, he'll be met with a couple of +P hollow points.

Here, let me look up vigilante for you, since you don't know the definition. Carrying a handgun for self defense is perfectly legal.

What are you going to do if someone attacks you with a knife?

WOWWW

And yes i am bored right now just got back from a ride.

your prob going to jail for possesion of stolen goods, it happened on Philly C-List so many times people are just saying "**** that stolen bike and trying to get it back to the orig owner." I had one listed and was warned 2 minutes after I posted it to take it down and just get rid of the bike, then P got like four more replies with horror stories of how each person tried to return a stolen bike and went to jail for trying to get what they paid for it. I took the one I had to The Water Works, took it out of my truck, propped it against a tree, got in my truck and left.

Shoot first. What else would you do? It's not a pissing contest, or a dick-waving contest. I have a friend that's a cop, and he was involved in a foot chase where the other party suddenly stopped, turned around, and pointed a handgun at him. At that point, only one of them was going home. If you were in a similar situation, which one would you be?

I just don't think it's the good method... Violence begets violence : The more you're prone to shoot on an attacker, the more he'll be prone to shoot you !
So, as i'm not a cop and don't mean to be, I'll probably prefer to comply with an attacker than to risk my life or that of people around.
My point is you take more risk carrying a gun than not.

You are basing your plan on the assumption that the tweaker is thinking rationally at the time of the attack. If you've spent any time around someone who is high on or just coming off of methamphetamine, cocaine, PCP, heroin, or other narcotics you'd see that "thinking rationally" is not a crackhead strong-suit.

The discussion started with a crackhead, and moved to a drunk. The theoretical debate about defense involved being threatened by an unreasonable person wielding a weapon against you.

Canada may not have the same private gun ownership as the US, but you also don't have the same crime rates. I live in one of the top ten safest cities for its size in the US. But 25+ miles away, some kid went nuts at a mall, and shot a bunch of people with his illegally purchased weapons. And I've been shot at once, almost 19 years ago. Based on the law of averages, I should be pretty safe now.

there's that photo of a guy who cut the skin off his face and fed it to his dog while he was on PCP, people on drugs aren't necessarily using a logical thought process

In fact I have, but although i've never experienced violent behaviours from drug addicts, you might have a point as noboby reacts the same...

Yeah, that reminds me of Bowling for Columbine... It's probably a society issue that is beyond our reach. I still don't like guns, and don't think they are the solution to insecurity.
