Anyone have fixed gear mileage goals for 2010?

It's not really mileage, but I plan on doing one of the more hardcore night rides around here with my fixed gear. I'm a bad climber though, so I hope I won't get dropped.

if you aren't some hipster poser (not saying you are) it's ********-ly easy. i did my first century this past august and it was on my fixed. my only complaint was my butt hurting. definitely going to invest in some REALLY good shorts for next time.

I'm about as far from hipster as you could get, outside of the fixed gear.

XC mountain racing, turned into road cycling, which last year, turned into a fixed gear road bike for getting around town.

My biggest fear is the big one I do has a relatively flat course with a 2-3 big grinder hills. It's not going up that I'm too worried about, I'm training for that, but it's coming down the other side I'm kind of afraid of.

Looking forward to it, though!

I have a "I hope I can keep riding goal" for 2010.

Distance is a secondary

It's not always that easy. Really long or particularly steep climbs where there is no option for a smaller gear are not ********-ly easy, nor is spinning out for 30 minutes coming down without being able to coast or rest at all. But yeah, happily spinning along on the flat for days is pretty easy. Just need to rest the butt and hands once in a while.

As far as centuries go, I think if you train up to it and learn to listen to your body, you'll be fine no matter what the road throws at you. A heartrate monitor helps a lot too. Example: when I first got a monitor, I learned that my HR shot up dramatically on climbs, often because I'd be out of the saddle cranking like mad. I spent a while figuring out how to climb just as fast, a$$ on the saddle, with my heartrate actually decreasing (at least for < 10% grades). For me, it's all about patience and persistence.

I guess what I'm saying is that simply getting up a hill is not itself a complete measure of how well you're performing on hills. The HR monitor will give you a different perspective on your conditioning and help you dial in your technique. Invaluable for long distance training.

I've been worried about my knees lately on long rides.. are you normally supposed to feel fatigued in that area first? I've had surgeries on both my knees, heh. Maybe I need to adjust my seat higher? I read Sheldon's article on knee pain and since have been trying to have perfect horizontal motion.

It would be cool if you posted your progress and learnings along the way here. We can compare notes and stuff. For example: I'm really paying attention to what I eat and thinking about how my body will turn it into energy. I'm much more focused and aware of what's happening with my metabolism. I feel like I could pretty much ride forever (probably 150+ a day) as long as I stay fueled up. Right now I'm eating steel cut oats for breakfast, riding, pasta lunch, salad or fresh fruit for second lunch, riding, whatever crap I eat while I'm out, then brown rice with tuna for dinner. It's working pretty good for now, and I don't seem to be having any issues with recovery or anything. What about you?

Edit: I've also discovered that baked potatoes are great for getting electrolytes and carbs and crap back. Right up there with bananas, so I'm told.

Well, I actually do more long distance on my roadie. I ride it a lot more because I ride w/ fellow guys on the cycling team. Once I graduate (end of the month).. i hope to be working and it'll be a ~30 round trip ride to and from work, but I usually like to detour to get more miles in. I may not hit 10,000 just on fixed since I like to distribute work to the mountain bike and road bike as well. I'm not as conscientious about my diet as you are analytically describing. I carb. load the day before, have the healthy stuff (bananas, fruits, etc.). I never drink soda, stay away from fast food, and other sweets. I haven't really used those energy mixes like ProLong or Cytomax, but am interested to see if they are really that effective.

Just going for about 5000.
I haven't been counting, but I have about 300 days left in the year leaving with me about 16 miles per day (not much at all) but I don't ride everyday so I'm going to have to make up for it and ride more on the days that I do ride. I'm going to start to keep track of how much I do per day. Probably keep a monthly calendar of my mileage up here (not that anyone would really care).

no specific FG quota here, just 'some'. i'm usually at 5-7k, spread across 4 bikes (1 FG)...but had a kid in Oct and have only a few hundred miles (and 15 extra pounds) since. trailer is a definite when the weather breaks, but the roads around here are not very kind, so i'll be greenwaying it...sigh.

think it would be ridiculous to pull a trailer on crushed gravel with a lugged carbon time? probably so...

Got my March total up today. It's pathetically low, considering that this will probably be the last "nice" month for riding until November, with the heat and wind coming up. On the other hand, on March 23rd I realized that I was still under the halfway mark for my monthly 833 miles and was able to get motivated to ride more. Prior to that I was video game bingeing. God I hate video games. But since then I've been having that craving for riding. I really like that feeling. You know when you take the long cut everywhere, and always looking for an excuse to squeeze an extra couple miles into every trip? Yeah, feels good. Anyway, I intend to pick up an extra 50 miles this month to put towards my February shortfall so I should finish up with about 880 or so.

Updated with my April mileage. What a great month! Got the extra 50 I wanted, and then another 80 on top of that! This month I did something a little different. Instead of 5-6 days on/1-2 days off every week, I just rode every day. Well, every day except for the first of the month and yesterday (70mph winds…not fun). I rode at least 30 miles each day, save for one day where it started raining. When I got home I had to change and clean the bike, and didn't feel like getting on the rollers. But yeah, I really didn't notice any negative effects to not taking a rest day or anything. In fact, I found myself chomping at the bit to go riding every day. My legs felt pretty decent every day and I never really got bored. I just might try and do the same thing this month, but put my minimum daily miles at 35 instead of 30. I reckon I'll get 1000 miles this month.

I really wish I had a bike that slightly less impractical and uncomfortable for long rides. I'm usually pretty unhappy by around 50, and come 75-80 I'm praying for death. I envy you.

Since I crashed my Vespa and smashed my foot, I'm concentrating on first walking then maybe doing a bit of riding. If someone were to paint a bike the colors of my foot, it would make people puke as they saw it roll by.

LoRoK, take a look at fixies like the Bianchi San Jose or the Masi Speciale Commuter. Or it may be your saddle that needs changing.

I've done more than at least 250 so far. Hoping to get 1000+ this year.
