2 or one brake.

Hello,

I am building up a new fixie, after my 1st one got trashed.
and i want to be able to ride freewheel on it also and not have to put my foot around and stop the tire with my shoe.

So my question is should i get both front and rear or just rear? it seems i only use my front as extra stopping, and primarily use my rear. just seeing if anyone has experience at this?

Thank you.

Why wouldn't you run both brakes with a SS? And if you're only going to do one brake, why the hell would it only be the rear?

Or is this thread meant to be a joke?

If you're going to use a brake one at the front is all you need.

Dont build a fixie, buy one, if you think the rear brake stops you better than the front.

Read this for a great course on braking technique, then decide which and how many brakes to install.

For a singlespeed two can be nice, but in a general physics sense only one is necessary and it doesn't go at the back.

If you're going to use only 1, i'd go with the front.

If you don't know how to use a front brake correctly (that is, without flipping your bike) or you're going to ride in wet weather, get two brakes.

Riding SS with only a front brake is generally advised against...not because it provides insufficient braking power, but because brake failure (usually at the cable) is always a possibility.

I rode SS with just a front brake for a couple weeks, but I'd feel more confident with two.

If he has to ask, he needs two brakes.

You need two brakes if you are running a freewheel.

i've been riding SS for a few years with just a front brake, just put your weight towards the back ..or you could pretend your skidding and fly over the bars..either way your choice

clearly you are a seasoned rider, while the OP is not.

On my SS and geared bikes, I like having a rear brake for loose-riding-surface and low-speed control.
