Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Frameset: 1981 Ron Stout (Salt Lake City)
RD, Cassette, Chain, Shifters: Dura Ace 7700 9-speed
FD: Suntour Superbe Pro
Crankset: Shimano 600 Tri-color, 39/48
Pedals: SR SP-11
Hubs: Ultegra 6700
Rims: Mavic Open Pro 32H
Spokes: DT Revolution (front), DT Competition (DS rear), DT SuperComp (NDS rear)
Tires: Vittoria Rubino Pro 3 700x25
Brake Levers: Shimano "Super SLR"
Brake Calipers: Suntour Superbe Pro
Handlebars: Nitto RM-016
Stem: Nitto "I-Beam"
Seatpost: Nitto 626
Saddle: Brooks Professional

I feel very fortunate to find one that fits me. Ron apparently retired from frame building in the 1990s. Aside from his mid-late 1980s fame from building for RAAM competitors, I have little information about his career.

EDIT: Here is a link to the photobucket album with all the build pics: 1981 Ron Stout Pics

Thank you. I just picked that one up. Its a bit on the big side but I make other work. I may trade it for something smaller but finding a clean replacement will be tough.

i just built up a rockhopper myself! first MTB bike...
although i second cc700's sentiments about reservicing front suspensions.
bought a rockshox used and basically going by blind faith the thing was in working order like the seller said.
its seems totally fine, but i have no prior experience. i like to build/service my own bikes, and the rockshox is now the only thing on any of my bikes i dont understand...
anywho yah nice Rockhopper!

btw heres a pic of it...i dont have a photo of it complete but you get the idea

after riding primarily fg/ss and road bikes its fun being able to go offroad

My old steeds

2010 CAAD9-5
1973 Araya

My MB w/ Synergy hubs/rims and fiberglass spokes; foul weather riding, off road drunken debauchery mobile. Needs new tires but I've seen no reason to rush with the rainy season limiting single track usage.

don't you want a mtb that stops fast, climbs fast, and descends well? a modern bike will do all 3 much better than an old rockhopper.

cantis/vbrakes will stop fast if set up right, any hardtail will climb fast, and decent is only as fast is your balls are big.

enjoyment is directly related to value. cheap bikes that perform well make you smile more

then why do we use disc brakes now? why have bottom brackets become splined and in most cases external? why do we have suspension that can be adjusted despite ball size?

I'm all for cheaper and even older/vintage whatever you want to call it but mountain biking has made leaps and bounds in technology and is better because of it.

well, why ride a fixed gear then? Not everyone wants to be hardcore with the latest and the greatest

Most people on here are shooting for the latest and greatest on their fixed gear. I'm not hating someone wanting a mtb and getting an old one I just know from experience a better mtb makes riding in the woods a better experience. I'm not saying go buy a 3k mtb for your first ride, just that newer components are better and more efficient in this case.

Tombc if you don't have something to contribute don't just call people stupid.

well, i bought that rockhopper frame for 20 bucks. admittedly there a number of parts i built it up with that were more expensive than the frame lol...but all in all its a used parts build, and every part was pretty cheap.
im not a hardcore agro MTBer at all, so the build suits my purposes, tooling around on the local trails. the deore lx canti brakes i have on there stop extremely well. maybe disc would be better, but i bought a cheap used but pretty good quality deore lx wheelset not set up for disc. basically i bought a number of used older deore lx components cheap. plus the frame i started with was sort of set up with cantis in mind.

also i basically had this exact bike (well a stock rockhopper) when i was allot younger, i think whenever it first came out. so theres that sentimentality.

theres tons of fancy pants all crabon hi tech road bikes out there but people still ride steel road bikes from the 70s and 80s, and still have a ton of fun riding them. so whats your point craig?

My point was only I don't see the appeal. Not there is no appeal. It is a great bike for the price I'm sure and will suit you well. Hopefully you ride it enough that you want to upgrade and continue mountain biking, but if not ride it into the ground. XT components are great. Everyone took offense to my comment for no reason.
