KHS: Uno vs. Soul

Howdy!

So I'm looking at both the Uno and the Soul by KHS. My buddy is a distributor and I'm looking at getting either bike in the coming week.

I was wondering if people had any feedback on either bike and if there's anything I should be aware of? I've always had fixtail mountain bikes in the past, so I'm new to all things commuter. I was advised that bull horn is probably a better riding stance for me due to my frame. I did used to get sore wrists when riding for extended periods of time on the road, so I suppose a better handlebar solution would do me well.

Also, I'm 6'5 and 230lbs, so what size will work best? I can't find any of the KHS models in my city, so I can't test-fit the bike. I'm assuming I'll need either XL or XXL - but I don't feel like buying a bike that's too small or too large, and then regretting my purchase for years to come (or take a financial hit in selling the bike)

Also, my girlfriend will be getting the Soul. She's 5'7 and 130lbs (shhh, don't let her know I said that) - I'm assuming a medium will fit her well?

Stupid ghetto city and not carrying KHS bikes :(

Uh, if you're buddy is the distributor, why are you asking us? Shouldn't he be able to answer these basic questions?

He's out of town until next week... and I'm impatient :p

I'm not an expert by any means, but judging by the look of them, I'd say the Uno.

I actually own an Uno, but it's an Origin 8. Because I've never owned any other fixed gear bike before, I can't say how awesome it is compared to other bikes. My bike is friggin' awesome to me though. Not to go on and on about it, but it also has bullhorn handlebars, which are pretty cool, and it has a flip/flop hub, so I can ride fixed or single speed. I guess it's a little on the heavy side at 24 lbs.; however, this has not been a problem at all for me.

Origin8 Uno

I found it. I need the XXL and the girlfriend needs the Large :) (which means the Uno is the only one that fits me)

Weird sizing. Large is 52.1cm and XXL is 63.5cm. XXL is on the higher range of what I should be riding, but would rather get something a tiny bit too large than way too small (like the 58.4cm XL)

I'm so excited to get a commuter bike!!

beatnik0422 04-07-10 12:53 PM

Right on, man!!! How far is your commute? Or are you not going to commute on your commuter bike?

Lil Freek 04-07-10 01:10 PM

Hahaha... I'm going to commute on the nice days :)
It's 20.5km each way. I've done the 20km ride a few times on a hardtail mountain bike, before... so I'm excited to do it again on a bike that weighs 25lbs less and without nubby tires and front suspension :p

I do admit that I'll likely bus in to town, most days, and ride home after work. I am not a morning person and really dislike car-traffic in my city. The bike paths are good, here, once you get into the core, but the strip between suburb and city is dangerous.

beatnik0422 04-07-10 01:16 PM

I hear ya. I know all about dangerous. My commute is 24 miles (around 38km) and for most of the ride there is no shoulder. And my city is not very bicycle friendly.

I hope you enjoy your bike!
