Could i use a BMX flip-flop hub on a fixed road bike?
Hey i'm new to this forum and new to the fixie/single speed world i have decided on converting my Schwinn Le tour in to fixie but i want a flip flop hub. I'm pretty young and don't have great funds so i looked on ebay and found some pretty cheap bmx hubs. Could i use these instead of buying real track flip flop hubs?
I recommend Formula hubs. They can usually be found pretty easily for 40 bucks or so. They may be branded under the Formula name, or they could be called Origin 8 or IRO, but all those are the exact same hub.
If you're thinking of adding a little versatility, I'd order one fixed/fixed, as you can mount a freewheel to a hub threaded for a fixed cog but you can't (or rather shouldn't) mount a fixed cog on a hub threaded for a freewheel as there's no place to put a lockring. With a fixed/fixed hub, you'll have the option of running two different fixed ratios, a fixed and a freewheel side, or two freewheels.
And while we're at it, for God's sake leave the brakes on the thing.
