Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Gearing combos

This thread refers more to teeth number rather than gear ratios...

Used to run 42/16 or 42/14 then got new cranks 48t. I read somewhere, pretty sure it was on Sheldon Brown's site that even teeth chainrings with even teeth cogs wear longer and help evenly wear a chain...on the other hand, a few people have told me to run even teeth on the 'rings and odd teeth on the cog.

What gives?

Even rings + odd cogs increase the amount skid patches.

So I'm guessing if you skid stop a lot, that would help prolong tire life..?
