Gear ratio question

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

48-18 is lower than 48-17.
Depending on the company, some cogs go all the way up to 22 or even more.
If you are going to climb a lot of hiil, 48-18 is good for you but you might spin out easily when you are going down the other side.

try an 18 or 19 cog.

I have 46x19 and a lot of climb around here are do able. Going down these hills is another issue and something to train for, but when you can spin down the hills without problems you'll feel great!
