build around fat franks : frame question ;p
o hey ;p
first off im just going to warn you ahead of time this is a "im being lazy and dont want to do my own research so maybe ill post here and someone will be nice and helpful" post lol
anywho i am seriously cereal about someday soon starting on a build specifically just to run schwalbe Fat Frank tires....something like this:
some sort of cruiser beef wheeled singlespeed town crusher type thing.
it just looks like so much fun.
now, i believe the fat frank tires are 26 x 2.35. super wide.
my question is....what do you suggest, in terms of CHEAP framesets, to develop such a build? Now, im assuming the overwhelming answer will be some cheapo craigslist find mountain bike.
BUT i dig the bike pictured above and how the top tube is more ground-parellel than relaxed and sloping, which i assume most mountain bike frames are like. really, i dont know much about mountain bikes or their frames.
i dunno. any suggestions?

Seems like a lot of MTB frames would fit those tires. I run 2.35 Big Apples on a late-80's Stumpjumper an 2.35 Kenda Cortez's on a Klein Pinnacle of the same era. The Klein had skinny tires when I took this picture though.

Late 80s, early 90s rigid MTB frameset with canti brakes. Try to fund one with horizontal drop outs so you won't need a tensioner and can run it fixed should you so desire. As far as today? Surly 1x1 will fit the bill perfectly. (Other than the non sloping top tube. It does slope, but not a lot)

I built this from a Vista mountain bike. It's a circa 1990 Taiwan frame. Room to spare for those insanely fat tires...

Those tires are no bigger than any other 2.35, are they?
And, there are 2.55 and 2.65 tires out there that we popular for a while with downhill people. Tires of that size would be hard to fit on most frames. But 2.35 is fine for most MTBs.

That project sounds like a great idea, especially with the hot and lazy summer days just on the horizon. I've done this somewhat to my old mtb but with Big Apples. I love this bike and it's breathed new life into it.

I too am looking for a frame to build into a fixed speed with big apples - I think I am going for the surly 1x1, it looks good and not too expensive.

You can fit 50mm tires to a Kilo WT without an issue.
EDIT: Come on~ I hate jesus threads.
