There's a reason that when I travel (and used to have my timbuk2 XL), I used my XL as my suitcase/duffel and my chrome as a mcguyver-purse. I'm also of the school of "there's no such thing as a bag too big, just cinch it down tighter", so I can't really comment on how effective "medium" bags work. How people get anything useful done with a medium/small timbuk2 absolutely baffles me.

The medium sized seagull is pretty big. It carries my 17" laptop no problem with a few other things. You can get it outfitted with a water bottler holder ( I did ), a pencil organizer ( I did ), a few pouches for other things ( I did ), and have plenty of space for some books, clothes, and some food. The strap that they use is nice and it does not just come loose.

Well, I don't think the Smaller bags are really designed for Messengers. I know that you could argue that if you're not a messenger, you might as well just get a back pack, but there is a large contingency (myself included) of people who prefer messenger bags over backpacks.

Personally, I find the ability to unclip the cross strap and swing the bag around to my front a very convenient feature. Not to mention it is easier to reach back and dump little things into it.

It is also an aesthetic thing. As much as actual bike messengers hate it, it is a fashion thing, though as stated it does have function.

And as someone not messengering all we need to carry most of the time is stuff for our commute or day trips or alley cat rides.

Hmm. That's another thing that I was concerned about. The medium seagull is really large (bigger than a large Chrome apparently), but it has like, 3 pockets. There's no zippered pockets, bottle holders or even pen sleeves unless you add them, and you can't add them to non-custom black bags. Basically if I get a Seagull I'm paying for an enormous tarp with no organisation features.

Also, are you Xavier from MacRumors?

Yeah thats me. And yes the seagull was expensive, so its not a budget bag. But totally worth it

I have a Seagull medium black bag and I like it. It is very simple, though. Just a velcro pocket under the flap, another one on the inside-front, and the main pouch, all running the length of the bag. I would say the build quality is excellent. I got it over the Chrome because it was cheaper and I'm not a big fan of the seatbelt style strap design, but I could see how it would be useful. It can carry a week's worth of groceries or a bunch of books or three six packs of beer or whatever. I've carried a laptop in it several times in the pouring rain with no ill effects. The buckle system works well. My only gripe is that when I don't have much to carry it seems kinda unnecessarily big and heavy. I think that comes with the territory, though.

Blicks bags also look great.

I'm a huge fan of small companies. Bagaboo or Blicks are both independent bag makers. With independents, you have the opportunity to get in touch directly with the person making your bag which is nice if you happen to have any special requests or ideas. That isn't something that can necessarily be done with a bigger company. You can also build a personal relationship with the retailer which is nice in the event of another purchase. They will understand your needs better.

Try as many bags on in stores as you can.
If it was only used for commuting I would take comfort over snazzy fancy b.s. anyday.
That being said... make sure it's actually useful too though! Ha ha

If I hadn't already bought my Berlin I would be looking seriously at Blicks and Bagaboo. In fact I've been considering selling it and buying one of their bags because they look friggin sweeeeet!
I've got a large size Bagaboo workhorse. It is a very excellent bag. I got it pretty quickly, just under 3 weeks being shipped from Hungary to ATL. The guy is really nice and helpful and communicates very quickly.

It should at least be considered in coming weeks/months where the USD could make some gains on the euro, making it even more affordable. At 108 euro right now, the exchange would be about 135usd, and a bit more for shipping. For that price, and all the features that are standard on the bag, it is a really good deal, especially if the euro falls more.

I've really enjoyed the bag. Great build, very waterproof, huge, plenty of pockets and such, wearable when empty, easy to use strap system.

I would say the Seagull medium is about 20% bigger than the Chrome Citizen overall.

I've been using a Chrome metropolis for several months now. It holds a ton of stuff and is really comfortable - does not budge at all.
Great on the bike not so much so for walking around. The Timbuk2 it replaced is much better for that.

the seagull medium is a good size. When I was in school, I would carry books/notebooks/laptop/food and a sweatshirt or rain coat or something in it every day.

Mine is the non-custom black bag, so it's pretty much a gaping hole. If I were buying one now, I'd probably spring for a custom one with a few more organizational features. I do like the outside pocket under the flap, tho. it's a good place to just put all your tools and leave them. And the inside pocket is good for cell phones, wallets, pens, etc.

Build quality is great and it is pretty much waterproof.

my new medium seagull bag just showed up, i was debating between medium and large, am glad i got the medium, perfect size.

it looks really well made, my only complain is the interior organizer pocked (advertised as 8.5x11 is EXACTLY that size so papers just barely fit- can't fit a folder or my sketchbook. this is kinda a bummer, but since i don't ever have to carry papers on their own, its not a big deal at all. I should have sprung for the extra interior flat pocket, but don't really miss it that much yet.; I also had to wait an extra week and a half or so since apparently they had a lot of sick employees- had good communication during the wait period, and my shipment got delivered a day early so it's all good. the only real extras i got were the lock holster(works great) and the interior organizer pocket.

oh yeah, they're no longer doing that embroidered logo, they've switched to a small tag above the right buckle (you can see it in the bad quality picture, and a small tag on the main strap on the front (under Scout's head). i like either, i bet these tags are faster to add than the old logo.

The bag is very comfortable, fits a ton, and seems to be well made. overall i give the bag an A-, as there's really not much to complain about product or customer service wise.

that can all be found on www.seagullbags.com easily, thier sizes are accurate. most ive had in it so far is a few books, a sweatshirt, two 2 liter sodas, my lunch, and i still had room for more. fits as it should, very comfortable.

How do you find the interior organizer?
I saw the pictures on the website but didn't know if it would suit my needs.
Does it do a good job holding a phone, keys and wallet.
That is my main concern. I don't like having them floating in a large pocket.

i stick those 3 in one of the 2 external pockets and they dont float around much. the internal one would also work well, it's exactly 8 1/2 x 11 and flat, and closes with a inch thick strip of velcro that goes along the entire top. It's very flat/secure. I also got the lock holster which i like a lot and reccommend. actually in hindsight i wish i got a few more pockets inside for organization, but not a huge deal.
