Problems installing tube
Hi Guys,
This is the first time I'm trying to put on tires and tubes. And I'm failing miserably at it. I'm actually really frustrated right now... I blew 4 tubes tonight trying to do it. So, I recently bought some new Velocity wheels and some Vittoria Randonneur 700x28c. Putting on the Randonneur was a pain. Seems like people say to avoid using the tire levers, but it seems pretty hard to do without them.
So once I get everything on, I start to pump the tire. The max on the tire says 85psi, but whenever I hit around 80psi, the tube always blows out. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. If I pinched a hole with the levers, I wouldn't be able to get the tire to that psi right?
I'm a newb with this stuff... a really frustrated newb. I'm tempted to take it to the LBS tomorrow, but I really want to figure this out and do it myself. Thanks for your help!

Hrmm.... I did more searching. Maybe this is the answer to my problem: https://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/577840-maximum-tube-pressure-psi.html

make sure that the tube is sitting right, meaning that its not twisted or bunched up.
you might be better off getting someone to show you how the first time.

Sounds like you are not getting the tire to seat right and the tube is bulging out.
Make sure rim tape is sound
Lever one side of the tire on
Install tube with a tiny bit of air in it, just to barely make it round
Make sure the tire logo and valve stem are lined up
Let any air out
Gently lever or manually get the other side of the tire on, being careful to not pinch the tube
Inflate tire to 20psi
Roll tire around to seat the bead
Inflate tire to 40 psi
Roll tire around to seat the bead
Bead not seated? Try again
Seated? Ok, install wheel.
Inflate to 70 psi and check for tire seating again
Good? Inflate to 100 psi and see what is up.
Kaboom? Go to the LBS and get them to show you.

No rim tape. Do I need it? Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try again tomorrow and make sure the tube is not bulging out before I inflate it to the max psi.

Nevermind, took too long to respond...
Do not install anymore tubes until you buy yourself some rim tapes, tubes aren't exactly cheap when you have to buy 5 of them in one day.

I'll buy some rim tape tomorrow! On one of the blown tubes, it looks like the hole is in the same area of the spoke. Thanks again! I feel a lot less frustrated now.

Also, you should wipe your rim down with a rag and some rubbing alcohol before you put on your new tape, make sure it's clean and debris/metal free.

OK, so you do need rim tape, and you shouldn't try to install any more tubes before that. However, I don't think inflating a tube in a wheel without a rim strip would cause a 'blow out.' If it really is a loud blast, it might still be technique. If so, install the rim strip and then follow the Dr.'s advice.

Maybe I used the wrong word to describe the "blow out". What I do is inflate it to around 80psi and then I hear a pop. I looked at my other tubes... there are holes where the spoke hole is. I have a good feeling that I can do this successfully with rim tape tomorrow.

If the tire explodes off the rim when you fill it up then it was not seated properly.
When you have a double rim you should be using cloth rim strip like velox. I doubt that what was causing your popping tubes, as it usually needs to be ridden for it to pop from the inside of the tube(side that sits on the rim).

Sounds like you got four good candidates for practicing how to patch a tube. Which, imo, is a more frustrating task to learn than installing tubes. good luck
