Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? How Often Do You Get To Ride?! Big Changes?

I currently ride my bike to work. About 3.5 miles each way over some hilly terrain in San Francisco. However, I just got a new job that pays 1.5x more but is in San Jose. I have to drive to San Jose. As much as its great that I got a better job, I feel surprisingly depressed over the fact that rides will have to wait til the weekends.

Evening rides are the best, especially during the summer.

I have the chance to ride at least once everyday, the thing is I don't particularly like riding alone and its nigh impossible for me to know when my friends will be able to ride with me.

I ride to work too, so I can ride everyday if I want. I have thought about what it'd be like to work in a different location. My bike is more than transportation, it's also how I stay healthy, so theoretically, i'd try to squeeze in weeknight rides if I had to, but honestly, who knows if that would happen in reality.

I'm in a unique situation that applies to very few members of this forum, namely, I'm retired so I ride whenever and wherever I want. Right now I'm training intensely for my master's track national championships in about a month from now, so 3 times a week I drive 60 miles to my velodrome to ride there, and 3 other days I ride locally, either on my FG or geared bike. This time of year it's very hot where I live, well into triple digits, so I get all my riding done by 10am, often starting before sunrise. When I was working, it was difficult to get my training in during the week in Summer, as temps can easily stay in the 90s well into the evening.

Ride your bike to the SF Caltrain station, take your bike on Caltrain and ride the train to SJ, then ride from the SJ Caltrain station to your workplace. Do the reverse after your workday is over. Many, many, many people do this to many destinations along the peninsula. Bonus: You can get off at earlier stops either on your way to work or on your way home, and get in added mileage. Good luck.

It totally does: as I do not know any fixed riders. None of my friends ride, and thus, sometimes its hard to get up off the couch. I can only imagine how fun riding is when you have some buddies who hit the road with you.

IMO, they do a good job. Most of the rush hour trains in the a.m. and p.m. are outfitted with two bike cars. Depending on the style train, this means a 60- or 80-bike capacity. I find that in general, the morning commute trains are less likely to be filled to capacity than the evening commute trains. But even then, I'd say I get denied entry on a train because the bike cars are full maybe once every three months, maybe. And usually, the next train is only 10 minutes or so away.

Everyday, anything from just plain on riding, to grocery shopping, it doesn't matter. I make excuses to ride my bike haha.

I have an opportunity to accept a new job that pays about 30% more than I'm making right now, but I can't bike to work anymore. I don't exactly *need* the money but of course it would be nice. I love riding to work (round trip is 15 miles) but I think I'd hate myself for turning down a 30% raise. Arrghhhh!! Not only that I have to figure it out fast.

This is the only good thing about being unemployed. I can ride my bike for hours at a time during the day.

But then if you get a flat and have to buy a patch kit, you can't make rent for the month.

It's a tradeoff.

patch kits are like 3 bucks man. who spends 3 bucks they were not planning on and then can't make rent?

a better analogy is what happens if you get hit by a car and your frame gets bent out of shape.
