fenders ideas

sad but true i am in need of a rear fender on my (undrilled brake bridge and uneyeletted fork) track frame.

all i can find are those silly clip-on mtb style ones that dont really do anything at all. is there another solution?

I assume you have a bridge between the stays. Most full coverage fenders mounting brackets can simply be zip tied up. You'll also have to zip tie the supports to the seat stays. I would recommend wrapping them with a bit of old inner tube to keep from F'ing up your paint. Up front you may be able to work something similar though it may be trickier. And of course this all assumes that you have the clearances to make it all go. Be sure to take your bike to the shop and do a quick trial fit to see if you can even squeeze them in.

anyone have pictures of a ziptie setup? does it hold securely without being attached to dropout eyelettes (for the rear)?

Here's some: https://www.mindspring.com/~d.g1/ziptie.htm

It held just fine. The rubber was nice and grippy on the frame and the zipties sunk into the rubber, so that was all good. I did have to ziptie the front of the fender around the bottom bracket shell (one on each side) since I don't have a chainstay bridge for it to clip onto.

I'd take photos but I ended up deciding it was silly to go mucking up my favorite ride for the occassional rain and just built up another frame where the fenders can live permanently.

i've used this silly clip on one for a while... https://www.rei.com/product/2136637.htm? hasn't rained much yet here in SF, so haven't had the full test, but so far so good... these are specifically for road bikes, nice and thin.

i want to construct a wooden fender that doesnt need stays. it would attach using some sort of quick release locking mechanism at the seatstay and chainstay bridges and then the section that extends over the top of the wheel would be a thicker section of wood or somehow reinforced so that it wouldnt need stays. here is my fancy diagram:

Take a piece of cardboard( or pizza box) about 5-6inches wide and fold it in half. Leave it by your door and if its raining and you are going to ride, take it with you and slip it over your brake bridge, secure with piece of electrical tape. Instant disposable rear fender. Had to do it this morning. That way when the rain stops you dont have some big ugly clipon plastic fender. Ta-Da!

from the bendywood site: "Q: Can I use BendywoodŽ outside ?
A: The short Answer is 'No', as it will expand and become more flexible when it rains. However, if these characteristics can be incorporated into the design then it may work for some applications."

ha.

The rear fender clips onto the downtube and bridge between the rear stays, for the rear brake:

its the Zefal 232 road mudguard.

I have those same fenders and they didn't work for crap for me. On my track, the front kept falling out (it just stuff up in the steerer tube) and the rear wouldn't fit though the seat stays. On my roadbike conversion, the front still kept falling out and the rear fit but didn't do anything for me.

The only thing they have going for them is they clip on, so they're easy enough to remove on nice days when you don't want to haul around fenders. But for that, I have more confidence in the SKS Raceblades even though I've never tried them.

Yeah, I have those ones also. I have a full coverage set that I use in the winter, but they busted so the cheap alternative was the Zefal clips.

They suck. If you want to look like you have fenders on your bike, then great. If you want to stay dry, not so much. They are too short, and the clip to the seatpost leaves a huge chunk of wheel spray the goes directly up to your butt and crotch.

Mmmm.
