Aesthetic preferences??? If your bike is parked illegally, it is parked illegally. In the article the man states that wheelchair bound people can't get past bikes. I'm hesitant to believe someone who acts so irrationally, but if it is true then that is some of the lowest of the low. Not saying I agree with anything this guy is doing only that parking a bike illegally is wrong and should be enforced. Nothing pisses me off more than having only one door to each building on campus because people are too lazy to park there bike 20 yards from the entrance on the appropriate bike rack.

How does gluing locks shut so the bikes can't be removed remove the bikes from the street? This guy is a freaking genius

I know this thread isn't exactly FG/SS specific but I knew a good discussion would result from posting it here. I was pretty outraged when my wife first showed me that story. If anything like that was happening in my town and I either caught the guy responsible in the act or found out who he is, it probably wouldn't result in anything made of sugar & spice.
I agree that sidewalks should not be blocked, but also agree that in a busy place like Brooklyn, it's not like there are bike racks every ten feet. Either way, glueing locks is only creating another problem in the place of solving the original one.

Two words: bait bike
And a van full of angry cyclists close by.
...of course video of the ensuing scene would be key. Is one of those vids I can't see the one of those two euro-pro cyclists slap-fighting each other like total pansy fops? I swear it would go classic viral in no time.

Y'know, except Brooklyn... and one of them would be wearing tight jeans.

I wonder super-glue solvent would work in a lock. If the glue gets into the pins and the springs, the cylinder probably won't come off. And, that's with a low-mid security locks in the 70's. I would have crap load of problems with new designs and/or high security locks. Any locksmith out here? Maybe it's a good idea to consult the manufacturers.

So the newspaper is fine with letting this guy remain anonymous? What level of crime would be necessary before they felt the need to report him? Smashing bikes with a sledgehammer? Smashing car windows? Smashing house windows? Smashing people's faces with a sledgehammer? Cutting off the coffee supply to Brooklyn?

Darn, Scrod, you are a mod now, which means my "In b4 for (krazyglued) lock" joke isn't funny.
On topic though,
This guy is a ******. If anything I am encouraged to hear that there is enough bikes to cause 'congestion' in williamsburg. That makes me warm and fuzzy on the inside.
That said, I agree that people shouldn't lock their bikes to things not for bikes. That said, if there is no bike rack available, and you need to lock up quick, it's not a big deal to lock your bike to a sign post, or whatever, just as long as you don't LEAVE it there. a 10 or 15 minute lock up on a street light isn't gonna hurt anyone. it's when you leave your bike there overnight, or for days at a time that it becomes a real problem.
It's common sense.
But if someone came into my town and got on a high horse and decided to glue all the locks? Ooooooh the rage I would feel.

damnnn I'm in this area every day. I don't know what this guy's problem is. Aside from the bikes locked up on the racks that are located by that train station (and there are an assload), the rest that I've seen are pretty evenly strewn out on the adjacents blocks. And it's not like the sidewalk is so narrow that a locked bike constricts pedestrains from walking around. However, being a native of the area, I do understand his frustration with the "yuppies." But not cuz of their locked up bikes.

From the way the article is written though, it definitely looks like that the dude's beef is actually not with cyclists in general, but with the hipster transplants (i.e. "yuppies") riding their "sweet fixies" all over BK. So, of course, his solution is to be pissy towards all cyclists.
Exactly what I was thinking.
"There are too many bikes here! Let's make it so that they're here PERMANENTLY! I'm so badass!"

it's a vicious cycle where no one can win.
The number of bicycles in williamsburg greatly exceeds the number of bicycle racks available.
I actually don't see much wheel chairs at all in williamsburg. That's not to say they don't exist and I agree, they should be able to go through the streets easy. But at the same time, you won't get through Times Square easy on a wheel chair either simply because there are just too many people. That doesn't mean they should start restricting the number of people walking in Times Square. He just have to accept that it is a very highly congested neighborhood.
And now that he glued all the locks, how are people suppose to remove the bikes to clear the streets? He is making a deeper mess than it originally was with a very immature, un-thought out plan.

Your point about people crowding Times Square is a valid one. Next time I'm in NYC, I shall super glue all of them together.

Maybe the topic and title of this thread should be changed to "Who or what would you like to superglue? And would you risk jail to do it?"

Crazy glue isn't what I'd call "cheap". I think this guy did a couple bikes and moved on.
Anyone local that can say if a boatload of bikes got hit?

So about $0.33 per bike. Yeah, I can see someone spending the cash to hit some bikes up.
I bet it takes a lot of glue to make steel on steel gum up. But hey this in NY, everyone knows how to defeat a bike lock easy and no one will stop you, hell they might even help.
