Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

That is one of my happy places... we always like to spend our Saturday morning going to the farmer's market, swing by Voodoo donuts for a maple bacon and a grab a Stumptown coffee.

me and the girl were just visiting, but the 3 days we spent there were awesome.
we stayed at the jupiter, went to that farmers market and voodoo donuts, brought back a bunch of stumptown, ate at a bunch of awesome places like J&M?, screen door, the farm....we were there for that food truck convention thing....my girlfriend's wine brand (shes the winemaker) was sponsoring it so we got in for free, and an hour early....so i walked around to about 3/4 of the food truck tents and sampled a little of everything till i couldn't move.

portland has awesome food (with a suprising love for bacon...i had bacon almost every meal. one food truck was serving maple bacon icrecream. it was actually super delicious...maple icrecream with chunks of candied bacon....and of course i had a maple bacon bar from voodoo) and a huge love for bicycling. in fact me and the girl found the extreme cautiousness of drivers in portlant to be comical. we are so used to drivers around us driving so aggressively and having to be super defensive on bikes here in california, but drivers in portland are like the exact opposite. well, for the time we were there.

its also really really clean downtown. comparitively to san francisco. actually portland downtown reminded me of certain parts of san francisco...except way cleaner, and like a 1/5th of the people.

and of course it was sunny and nice out the 3 days we were there. we totally joke about moving there. friends who have lived there though are like "yah portland gave you guys 3 days of awesome weather to real you in.....then once you move there it rains 300 days out of the year"

so yah portland is a happy place for me too

Hell yes... maple bacon bars for the win.

I am usually in Portland in the fall / winter as my fiancee lives there (for now) and the summer is high season for my bicycle shop so I really can't get away... June is also Bike Month here and I am very involved with that.

Was just there for 2 months and even when it is damp and cool, it is a pretty nice city and reminds me of YEG as both cities are built upon rivers, have thriving bicycle culture, and think we have more bridges although they are not as impressive as our river cannot handle sea faring vessels.

Unlike Portland, we get nearly 300 days of sunshine here although you have to put up with a little more cold.

Riding helps like nothing else... I have axial load issues in my lower back and riding relieves that a great deal.

Beats being stoned off my ass 24/7...
