I've had about a half dozen bicycle crashes, all race related, where my helmet was broken and my head injuries ranged from zero to a bad concussion and some memory loss. Had I not worn a helmet or if the helmet had been an inferior design that did not absorb the impact as effectively, then my injuries would have been more severe, possibly fatal. Unless the cork helmet is tested scientifically and demonstrated to have comparable impact absorbing capabilities as engineered foam, then it's no better protection than riding helmetless, except that maybe it'll save your scalp and allow for an open casket funeral.

Maybe a cork helmet would best if you ended up unconscious floating in water. Maybe not.

If you are looking for street clothes with the comfort of cycling gear, it is going to be quite expensive.
Some people seem to wear street clothes over cycling specific clothes, bibs, chamois, jerseys, etc so as not to appear "crazy cyclist" like. This gives the advantage of allowing you to wear your normal wardrobe with more comfort. Possibly save some $$$

And this forum. Particularly SSFG and Commuting, there are tons of threads on how to get to your destination while not looking like a dork, be comfortable, and resist the elements.

Yes, IF it is sold as a cycling helmet, it will need CPSC certification. However, they can sell it as a novelty item with a warning that it is not certified for cycling or other sport use, just like there are decorative outlaw motorcycle helmets. I'd be amazed if that thing would pass the ANSI or SNELL tests that are required for certification these days. It's not just the crush properties of cork that are suspect, but also the lack of a hard outer shell to help distribute the load over a wide area and keep the helmet together. Even the straps have to pass tests showing that the helmet will stay on the head during an impact.

Maybe you should consider turning some tricks to afford a wardrobe of cycling clothes.

I like the many ideas and websites here! I could have searched through forums and stuff for this info, but why when you are willing to give me links in a thread I create? Mwahaha.
I think mostly I've seen many pictures lately of riders wearing cut off jeans and printed t shirts or cycling jerseys (or printed briefs like crackrocksteady). And that's great because they are comfy and work well for biking. But I'm wanting to go more toward James Bond casual rather than dorm roommate casual when I'm out and about!
Seems to be a lot of interest in the helmet thing. I like looking at ideas that could possibly work. My main thing with the cork helmet idea was sustainability plus good looks (although some people seem to disagree) without looking like a space ship on your head (which I also like, but I'm looking for alternatives).
Those Bern helmets are super nice!

Look, it's fine if you want fashionable clothing and don't mind if it's expensive. The reason everyone is so focused on the helmet is that helmets are worn for the safety of your head, not for fashion. I'm glad that you aren't forsaking the helmet entirely for the sake of fashion, but you also have to make sure that any "alternatives" are actually a good choice.
And, you are really easy to rib on, since you come off as extremely hipster-y. :/

Hmph. You don't know how much I make. I think I do want street clothes with cycling gear comfort. But I like the idea of wearing cycle gear under clothing too, that might work in some cases.

So you are looking for more business casual cycling gear. I don't really have any links for that. Again, Commuting forum could probably reveal some great information. Also, Bikesnob was ripping on some cycling specific button down with like, immovable sleeves or something, and long tail. I can't really remember, it was probably like 6 months ago. For pants though, there are a ton of options. Even nice dress pants should be reasonably breathable and flexible, so long as it isn't too dirty out.

How does one come off hipster-y on a forum? Do I come off as hipster-y? You know, it's hard to tell how someone really is by just how they "talk" on a word and picture internet forum. Being hipster is more than just words on a screen isn't it? AM I NOT MORE THAN JUST WORDS ON A SCREEN?? :"(
I'm gonna go make a 21 grain avocado tomato sandwich with egg-less mayo.

Just make sure you're wearing that hip cork helmet after crashing from pedal strike due to the lowered BB.

Why is it okay for people to worry about the look / "colorways" / color-coordination of their deep-V-equipped bikes, but if you ever even consider how YOU look while riding, you are singled out as a hipster?
