threadless stems that don't suck

no, not the lugged ones.

i'm looking to find a decent threadless stem with some drop/rise to it. i figure that if i have to get a threadless stem, then i better find one that has lots of drop. i'm looking for a 1 1/8, 26.0 clamp, around 100mm, with a 30degreeish drop (or rise). preferrably black. if anyone can help, please let me know. my bicycle aesthetic won't be complete without it.

i just noticed how much that paragraph reads like a personal ad. anyway, please help if you can.

Its hard to find threadless stems with old school angles. Shame the Nitto stems have no rise cause I like the lines of them.

Best I found so far is the Deda stem which is about 67 degs. But its ugly, expensive and oversized (31.8). See
https://www.worldclasscycles.com/deda_track_stem.htm

But its the only one I've seen that has more than a 17 deg drop, which is about what the best of the 'road' stems will give you.

that is nice, but it neither has rise, nor a 26.0 clamp, and is not black. very pretty though.

I use the Dimension MTB stem. Looks okay on my bike. Not too expensive. Polished aluminum.

Harris and airbomb have them. Here and example:

there's always salsa. although, it looks like they've changed their clamp design to a 2 bolt cap, rather than the wrap-around single bolt which looks a ton more clean.

... but is a major female dog if you want to change handlebars. If you go the ugly threadless route I recomment taking advantage of the poptop.

i don't change bars that often...and i've acquired enough that i've got a stem for every set of handlebars that i have that use grip tape or those evil soyo grips. i have two salsa stems, one long one that keeps my road drops company, one short one that i use when i put bullhorns on the roadie, one SR that has my cinelli track drops in it, and two dimension alloy two-bolt stems on my trackies for now. the two-bolt design is really handy for swapping handlebars, but not as convenient as just having different stems for each bar.

someone should make a threadless-to-quill adapter.

I believe the proposal was not for the usual threadless-on-threaded headset but the other way round. If there's such a beast, I've never heard of it. Who makes it?

though, i suppose the threadless-to-quill adapter would be just as pointless (if not more so) as the quill-to-threadless adapters that already exist...

do a forum search for something like "torrin stem" or "danger stem" -- see if you can find the thread where whom ever found the stem lucklust uses on his pista, seen here
torrin's stem

its an MTB stem flipped, they might sell it in 1 1/8

How come everyone freaks out about that stem - isn't it just a threadless with a super positive angle that he turned upside down?

yeah, but as it says on old skool track, its a nice mix of old skool and new school, with some ingenuity. Looks fancy. That's why people like it.

of course, you're unaesthetic, you may not appreciate it.

I use a flipped mtb stem.

I just got some cheap 40 degree rise one from nashbar, flipped it, stuck in a shim, and cranked it down on the bars, because those few .millimeters of difference don't really matter.
