Help me find a bike!

Hello all, I'm new to the whole fixed gear scene. Looking for a bike as a daily commuter also to lose some weight lol. Not sure exactly what size bike to get, large or XLarge. I'm about 6'1", someone told me to get a 61cm bike. What sites do you recommend to buy some gear? I'm on a budget of like $400 max. Just looking for something I can ride around, doesn't have to be fancy. Thanks.

With that budget almost everyone will tell you this http://bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott.htm

It's a good budget bike. For someone 6'1" probably get the 57cm. Maybe. Let someone else chime in on that.

If you can stretch 100 more which I did, I got the IRO Mark V. I had the same budget as well, kinda. Mine just shipped today! AHH

Schwinn Cutter:

Schwinn size chart:

A much better sizing tool:
https://www.wrenchscience.com click 'fit system', create a free account and enter your measurements

www.performancebike.com will also have a few options in your price range: look at their Scattante model

bump, any other suggestions before I buy a bike?

for size, your best bet is to try a few bikes out. Your height doesn't always correlate with your inseam.

Dude, please stop recommending Republic Bikes. Please.

+1; excited for upcoming tour

They are coming here on Sept 15ish and I can't get in because that place is for 19+ and my birthday 19th birthday is in Nov... :(

Good thing they are sold out though, makes me feel better. I've missed SO many concerts because of the damn age limit.

hpmcardle 08-29-10 12:21 AM

Euhhh yeah...I missed an 18+ deadmau5 show a couple months ago. Made me rage so hard. 's good to be a youngun though, life isn't all that bad. Yet.

Squirrelli 08-29-10 01:02 AM

Deadmau5 was here earlier this month and he was here during the Winter Olympics; both of which were all ages but I'm not the biggest fan. :P

Threadjack confirmed. His stuff is kinda guidocore, which I don't really like, but it's still a bunch of fun in a crowd. I've heard the show he puts on is pretty amazing (visually, at least) ;)

Any word on that bike Mr. adio3x? Poast Pix Pl0x!

Measure your inseam and that'll give you a better judge for a size than just your height. the kilo will probably be your best bet unless you're willing to hop on craigslist and check out the local scene for a used ss/fixed. Plenty of those where I live, all in immaculate shape.

Back to this for a second...

I still haven't gotten a bike yet lol. Plans didn't work out, so I didn't need one just yet. Ok I'm still a little confused on which size to get. I took my measurments in wrench science ( a few of them were confusing, so if it looks weird thats why). I plan on going with one of the mercier kilo's. Still don't know which size to get.

Wut. You are taller than 6', yet the sizing system is telling you to get a 50cm? I ride a 53/54cm and I'm 5'8".

+1, something's not right here. I'm 5'10" and my 54 is actually on the small side of fitting me.

I know thats why I thought something was wrong. Cause I originally stated that someone told me to get a 61cm, but wrenchscience said a 50cm.

Great Pan 02-28-11 02:58 AM

i'm 6'0 with a 32.5 inch inseam and i ride 58's generally.

I guess some of your measurements must have been off.I had great results with the fit calculator on competitive cyclist. It also helps to have someone help you measure for greater accuracy.
Also, toptube length is more important than seattube/standover.

Since you're having so many issues on size, I'd go buy a bike in person (if the price is right). Sit on it, ride it, etc. I'm 5'7"-5'8" and I ride a 52 cm so....

walt_jabsco 02-28-11 05:17 PM

I don't think your nuts are only 30" off the ground if your nearly 6'1" :)

Could be wrong - I'm built like a stork with 32.5" inseam and just barely 6' - unless you are built like a dachshund :)

Cheers
