Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

If you've a really cool, helpful bikeshop around they might be able to help you out, but with the frame coming in at $180, a nice complete would be tough to get under 500 including parts and labour.
I found Sheldon Browns resource last night and was reading for a few hours and I totally see what you mean here. I'll keep looking. Thank you for the great response. I can already tell you guys are going to make this a lot easier than I thought it would be.

You could convert that pretty easily but French bikes from that era had some wacky standards so you'd be limited on some parts swaps. See Sheldon's French Bikes page for more info on that.

I'd keep an eye out for something kinda like this. Unfortunately I think the fork on this one is bent, so would need replacement if it is in fact bent. Cromoly Miyata, Nishiki, Univega, Centurion, etc from that era are pretty nice.

I wish I had somebody as knowledgeable as you to talk to in my area, I feel so overwhelmed I don't even know where to begin. All I know is that I like riding bikes and I want to spend less than 500$ + some money to restore/customize color of the frame. I need something that gets me to point A to point B, fits me right and is fun, safe and reliable. I'm going to study Sheldons pages over the next few days and hopefully have a better foundation but I don't know much about geared bikes either. I'd say I know more about Fixed gear at this point, lol.

Ugh. I wish their was one simple resource that walked me through this, but life isn't that easy!

Indeed. What year is it? I love when people need to clear things out at crazy prices (but hate when I have to do the same).

$160 for Soma frame, fork, crankset and BB, as well as a King headset. Could probably snag it and flip it later.

Wait why did it need a custom built seat post... Seems like maybe the builder should've used a standard tube size.
