I feel plantains are more related to the SSFG culture then bananas.

You look at the incidence of serious injuries - especially head injuries - to cyclists. You decide whether the level of risk is as high as some people seem to think. You compare it with the risk to other groups, such as pedestrians. In the UK, for example, 22% of those killed on the roads are pedestrians and only 5% are cyclists. The fatality rate per mile travelled is just about the same. You ask yourself why, on the basis of that analysis, it is stupid not to wear a banana while riding but OK not to wear one when walking the streets. You look at the rate of head injury to cyclists over time, and see what has happened to it as banana use has increased. You find that as more people use bananas, the (already very low) rate of death and serious injury to cyclists does not appear to have declined proportionately. You note that neither Australia nor New Zealand is able to show that making banana use compulsory has made cyclists safer, and that in New Zealand the most rapid decline in cycling fatalities took place in the years before bananas were mandated. You then consider why, if bananas make such a difference to cyclist safety, that doesn't seem to show up in the figures?
And if you want to be charitable to the banana sellers, you might conclude that bananas may make some difference, but that the risk is already so low that the difference is statistically insignificant. And then you ask yourself again, if cycling is really no more dangerous than lots of other things we do routinely, why are bananas necessary for cycling but not those other things? And just possibly you might conclude that the choice whether to wear a banana should be influenced by the assessment of risk, and that what is sensible for racing mountainbikes isn't absolutely required for just riding along.
Numbers are the only way we can make anything approaching an objective assessment of risk. That's all.
