Can I make mountainbike hub fixed?
Can I lock a mountain bike hub to make it fixed, non free wheel?
I made a SS mountain bike, but want to make it fixed for winter riding on the street. I have a summer fixie, and want the mountain bike set up the same way - fixed. Switching between ss and fixed is a bit of a pain.
Short of buying a new hub, it it possible to make a shimano LX mountain bike hub fixed?

If you've got a disk brake hub in the rear already, this will get you going for about 30 bucks. And it will be easy to switch back and forth, if you can give up the rear disk brake while the cog is installed

some interesting stuff! That disk cog looks intriguing but I just have V brakes, so that won't work.
Looks like the Surly fixer may do the trick; now I just have to figure out what it is! ;-)

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
One very important consideration is that to run a fixed gear you need horizontal dropouts or an eccentric bb or hub to set the chain tension... and most disc equipped bikes have vertical dropouts.
Juts picked up a Moulden mtb and if it had horizontal drops I would be running it with a flip flop and a fg/ss set up... as it has verttical drops it is set up as an SS.

I've got a fixxer on my Spinergy Rev X's and it works fine. Never had and problems with it loosening or any play. Totally rock solid like it was always a track hub. Note, I don't skid stop so the extra stress of that I can't help telling you how it would hold up to that. It cost more then some cheaper track hubs but then you don't need have to buy a whole new wheel set or have a new wheel made. Two thumbs up for me!

Yeah, mine has vertical drops too. I picked a cog/chainring to fit the length needed, and then
I just did the sheldon brown trick to make the axle a little eccentric (giving me abouyt 1/8" adjustment). That way I can make the chain as tight as I need with no play in the drive train.
