Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Which bottom bracket to get? - $30-$50 range

Replacing my bottom bracket, a RPM BB 7420 - 68x103mm. Has about 4000 miles on it, should've lasted longer, but it's all grimey and crunchy.

Looking at:

Sugino CBB-103
http://www.ride-this.com/index.php/s...ource=googleps

RPM (supposedly the same as Sugino?)
http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?m...5&currency=USD

Origin8
http://store.citygrounds.com/store/p...et-68x103-JIS/

IRD (made by Tange)

Anyone have any opinions?

Thanks in advance.

I'd go for whichever one costs less, as they're all pretty much the same.

Read the original post. Shimano doesn't make a 103.

Also, Shimano uses a plastic adjustable (non-drive side) cup. The others are aluminum or steel.

That only works if you are trying to move the crankarm outboard, but not the other way, which is probably the case here.

Not all Shimano are plastic NDS...but most are.

Yeah, but the under $20 el cheapo cartridge ones definitely are plastic. The other brands are between $20 and $25, so it's really being penny wise and pound foolish to buy one with a plastic NDS cup just to save a few pennies.

thanks for the help

hey all,

thanks for the help/suggestions. This bike requires so little maintenance, and has been so good to me, i don't mind spending 30ish for a nicer BB.

As for the crank arms, I'm re-using the same ones, just replacing the BB. Not trying to move them anywhere, which is why I'm getting the exact same size.

So, I guess I'll go with the Sugino....or any of them.
