Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Threaded headset, as opposed to a threadless headset.

Read this before you buy anything that won't work with your current setup: https://sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html

To answer your question, that chrome thing is part of your headset.

Before buying one, you should determine if you need a JIS or ISO threaded headset. This bike stuff is tricky, huh?

p.s. if you don't know what it's called, you certainly don't have the tools necessary to install it, which means you either need a knowledgeable friend or an LBS, either of which can help you find a black headset.

My guess would be JIS. Unless you've taken a measurement of the inside of your old crown race using a caliper, you most likely won't know.

Is this bike, by any chance, a Centurion bike? I just bought one for $150, perfect unused condition, yesterday. It has similar hand-drawn decals similar to your picture. I'm going to convert it to fixed gear too.

Spray painting your headset is such a poor idea.
