Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I had a Puerto Rican guy stop me and tell me that I had the biggest white walls he's ever seen.
I get "nice bike" a lot but other than that not too many people comment on it. where I live most people don't have nice bikes so I do get looked at while riding and in some areas you don't want to stop because they will steal your bike right out from under you.

About a month ago i passed a woman on a road bike, all kitted out, going uphill. She caught me on the downhill and asked if my Kilo was an "ultralight" frame.

Well, "ultralight" is relative.

Compared to a Volvo, for example.

"Nice bike"
"You've only got a brake on the front? Is that one of those fixies? You guys are crazy! Beautiful bike though." (older guy at the bike shop)
"Did you add the chrome fork and back part yourself?"
"Fixed gear.. Nice job.." (sarcastically, from high schoolers in prius)

That's about it.. not too many people talk to me..

I get a lot of females (in cars) that say "Wow, you're going really fast!!!!" Its a nice ego boost even when its not exactly true. Most people equate keeping up with traffic and going fast, which is not necessarily the case given that 99% of the time its downtown, stop-n-go traffic. But I can't help but grin regardless.

I get a ton of people (usually people who don't know much about bikes) ask, "Is it light?" No. No its not. Its a Draft. But I always lie and say it is. "Hellz yeah, brah. 6lbs 8ouces like sweet little baby Jesus." Or I've had people ask me if it was carbon (I'm not even joking).

A few days ago I was unlocking my bike in the rain, and some guy came up and said, "I bet that sucks, doesn't it? Riding in the rain?" People make similar comments as if to suggest that I ride out of necessity as opposed to preference.

A lot of "fixie" guys ask me why I ride with brakes.

7:00am, homeboy crossing the street next to a 7-11. In one hand in a coffee, and the other a slurpy. He just gave me a nod and carried on.

I had a similar experience the other day...

Old man on a motorcycle pulled beside me and asked me how I liked my fixed gear, yes he said fixed gear. I was like "Yea, I like it a lot, it gets me where I want to go."
He talked about the he likes to ride his bicycle and drag his BOB Yak around with his dog on it, we chatted a bit til the light changed.

The coolest most awesome incredibly tremendous thing was, he had his dog in the back seat in a crate of some sort. The dog was wearing goggle, helmet and scarf/vest? and it was probably the best thing I've seen in awhile. It totally made my day/week/month, and other pedestrians' day as well.

I thought this was a good one:

Riding down the street with a friend. She sees a bike shop, wants to get a basket for her cruiser. We go in, I set my bike against the wall.

After purchase, bike shop guy says "Nice bike!" in regards to my Raleigh Rush Hour, and makes a B-line for it and immediately hefts it. He then says:

"Pretty heavy. At least it looks nice."
