Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What do others say about your bike?

We all know what other forumers say about your bike... but what do people say to you in person?

-a "fixy kid" told me how my ellipses were knockoffs of his velocities
-another person told me my fender was 'gay' in the pouring rain. i was dry. he was not.
-guy at bikeshop asked me if my concept was a leader.
-dude with republic wanted to trade for my concept because his 'had more colors and mines was just lighter'

things i get frequently:
"that would look sick with b43s"
"what the hell is a zipp?"
"you should get risers"
"why do you wear a helmet?"

thats alot of the stuff on the top of my head, what do you hear?

The one guy at a bikestore really far from my house told me he really likes my bike but other than that just a few people saying "Panasonic makes bikes?!"

Usually people don't say anything though.

"Where's the shifters and brakes on your bike?"
"How do you stop on that thing?"
"Nice/ dope bike component/ frame."
"Sweet HED3/ trispoke; wanna trade me for _______?"
(I get these the most when I'm riding for recreation on my vigorelli or poncept)

I also got this one once before for no apparent reason:

"That's too much work for me. Put a motor on it."
"Why doesn't it have a motor?"
"How much didja spend on it?"
When I told the guy, he said "You could have gotten a big screen for that much." 'Told him I have one.

Usually from the chubby Marlboro crowd.

Mostly just people on the internet who are jealous of my [spingery, lugged carbon fiber trek].

Other than that, the Chesini is really the only one that gets the "I like your bike!", "Wait lemme see that shifter setup...", "You working?" comments.

I don't have particularly flashy bikes.

Totally forgot about the time a woman in a late model BMW slowed down to yell at me "Use the sidewalk!" This was me fully clad in a kit. Anyways, I ended up catching up to her at a light and I knocked at her passenger side window and yelled "hey remember me?". She freaked out and ran the light which was protected by red light cameras.

the most common questions on the train/street
where are your brakes?
how do you stop?
what if a car pulls out in front of you?
why are your tires white?
how much does it cost?

people at critical mass, art hop, and other rides really like the chrome pista, except one guy who really hates my alex wheelset for whatever reason. last night at a halloween night ride about 4 people asked if they could take pics of the chrome pista, a couple wanted pics of me doing trackstands. the pink mercier gets lots of attention too, all my bike riding friends love the color, the non riding friends think i am crazy! the guys at the packing shed always ask why did you buy a pink bike, the ladies at the shed like the color.

Oh yeah, the stuff motorist yell is always the most inane.

I was rolling up to a red light pretty late one evening a little while back, very little traffic on the street, just one car on the cross street at the intersection. I fully stopped at the light, well out of the intersection, waiting to go behind him once he passed. He rolled forward a few feet into the intersection, then stopped, looked at me, lurched forward a couple more feet, stopped again, looked at me some more...
The whole time he had a green light and I was track standing, not making any attempt to enter the intersection at all.

After a few seconds I got tired of his indecision and just went through the intersection in front of him, only to hear the guy yelling out his window after me:
"RED LIGHT, *******!"

Really?

I get the occasional:
"Spin mother****er spinnnnnnnnn."

Staff at bike co-op:
"That's a looong seat post."

Some chick across the street:
"Neat bike."

Roadie:
"I have a fixie too, yea...I don't like it."

Those are the ones that I remember from this month..
