Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

You are going to need some specialized tools, like a bottom bracket tool, chain whip, possibly a headset press, if yo have a thread-less headset, plus the more common tools like allen keys and hex wrenches. most of the disassembly you can probably figure out on your own, but the re assembly is where things might get complicated. It would be advisable to have a friend who is more knowledgeable about bikes to help you with this, as a guide can only get you so far.

I would check to see if you have a local bike co-op in your area. This can help tremendously if you're trying to do this on the cheap being they usually offer both:

1) Tools
2) Knowledge

for either free (usually for members) or a neglible fee (local one here is a $7/day shop 'fee' for unlimited time)

I also highly recommend finding a bicycle co-op. I had my bike powder coated and took it to a co-op to strip it down before sending it off. I saved $80 the LBS was going to charge to do it for me. The co-op I took it to asks for a $7 donation per hour which is more than reasonable. I also learned a lot of stuff about my bike I never knew in the process. Some of the tools needed to do this can be expensive for something you might use only once or twice.
