i am about 6'1" and like a fair bit of reach. This bike has less bar drop than my road bikes. It works great for casual riding.

So I'm 58 and have been a fixed rider for at least 30 years. Raced road plenty, but never track. I have two fixes, a Colnago and a Spicer, and love mixing fixed rides in with my road rides to keep training interesting. My fixie routes are rolling 30-35 miles, and although I occasionally utilize my single front brake in the little traffic I encounter, my goal is to never use it.
Love the purity and simplicity of fixes, IMO the most elegant bikes of them all.

Turned 40 this past June,started out SS'ing and mtn biking at the same time,in the mid-late 80's. Went back to SS'ing around '02 (with a shiny new black Redline Monocog),to 29er SS around 2008 (having everything from a Redline Monocog 29 to Vassago Jabbers,to a Gravity-Bikes Direct.com SS-currently building up an On One Inbred). Never been much for one gear on roads tho...maybe it's time to change that...

Just got back on the bike after a couple of months off. Extra weight to carry. Loss of fitness. Couple that with my bi-polar and I'm doing distressingly poorly. Hell, I even fitted an 11-32 cassette on the Europa (triple up front) and could only just get up that sodding great hill that I have to ride up every afternoon on the way home. Sheesh, no wonder I couldn't get up it on the fixed gear the other day. Lots of riding required methinks. Good thing we're heading out of winter and into some better weather here. [\winge]

I hit forty this year. I mountain biked back in the mid to late 90's. I sold my bike (big mistake) after getting married. Now I want to give fixed or SS a go. Mostly for exercise with my kids, and commuting to work. So far I'm thinking of going with a Kilo and slowly upgrade. I'm very new to this all. It's fun learning the lingo and trying to figure out how to part together a bike. Thanks for being generous with you experiences.

Ok Ok I just knew it would happen and you'll all laugh knowingly......after three months with a three speed (SO high spec tech) I'm reverting to FG again. I just haven't enjoyed it! Far too many decisions to be made, far too long looking at my computer, and no whooping. Due to work related stress and a change of career (at the scary age of 61) I've put off the 24 hour challenge so I get a whole eight months of FG before the BJ becomes three speed again. Wife (pics to follow) has been laughing at this decision as she's doggedly kept up with her SS (and me!) all through the summer. Can I come back into the fold? Please?

Supportive wife that rides a SS - that's just weird, either you're lying or the luckiest man on earth. Where do you find such a woman?

After a few battles of my own recently, I've been forced back onto the Europa with uber-wide gearing and a cluster of thousands on the back end. I fully understand your lust for the simplicity of fg. I intend to get strong, fit and sane (pause for hysterical laughter) then back on the Hillbrick ... with a 3 speed fixed gear hub. It's not enough to get me up 'that sodding hill' (my commute) but it makes the run down it a pure delight.

I am 41. I have been riding MTB's for 19 years. Between work, family and weather (FL trails flood) I haven't ridden much in the last year and a half. I am 5' 11", was 200lb and now I am 240lb. I got a fixed gear for some rain or shine road training to loose some weight. I have been doing 100-150 mile per week getting started up again. I will be increasing that over the next few weeks.
I am doing solo rides right now and tracking progress with a GPS app. Not too bad for a fat guy.

Motion X GPS. It's a great app and does a lot of stuff..Calling out dist traveled and current or avg. speed every 5 min, records height climbed and descended, maps route....

weeeeeeeeeeeeehahhhhhhhh. i can start posting in this geezer thread in two days! well so much for the 30's. lesse, been riding bikes since i was kindly pushed down a hill by my older brother at the tender age of 6. been riding road bikes since i was 12, mtn bikes since i was 20, single speed 4 years ago and cross 1 year ago. i still have all my teeth though a few are in disarray after a crash a few years ago. hopefully this new and crotchety decade will yield even more fun and many more get off my lawn statements!

I'm a long-time rider. Bought my first "10 speed" (a Bianchi) fifty-two years ago. I rode with a fellow named Boots Ward who was the go-two mechanic for the small cadre of serious cyclists in the DC area at that time. Boots showed up at a ride with a fixed-gear which intrigued me then. But I got into family, other things, and put the idea aside. At 58, I bought a fixed gear on a whim, figuring I'd have to stick to fairly flat roads. I now love taking the FG on 40-60 mi. hill rides. At 67, I will be doing my second fixed-gear century of the year in early September.

I did 33 miles fixed last night, about half with our Night Riders group (the other half solo, to and from the ride). Most I've done on FG in a while. My quads are feelin' it this morning. I almost took the geared bike but I'm glad I went fixed.
