My housemate runs 48-14 as well. I don't have the heart to tell him he's stupid, but I tried explaining gear inches to him one day and I just got a blank stare. He needs to stick to his downhill bike.

I can't stand that attitude, not just about bikes but about anything. I bet years from now something is gonna make him learn it and he's gonna hit you up and be like "have you heard of gear inches and gear ratio? It's crazy man!"

48x14 works for me, with the S3X hub. I don't think I'd want it as my only gear, though.

Is it because I'm going 48-14 brakeless or just the fact that I'm going 48-14?

Yeah, I took it off and put it on my road bike. The wheels I have on now are Mavic Open Pro.

I've had it about a year now, riding it mostly in the winter and bad weather (I have it set up with mudguards). No problems so far.

48x14 brakeless on the street is extremely irresponsible. Unless you have extremely powerful legs and extremely skilled at seated skids and all other stopping techniques. Can only imagine the kind of speed you get up to with that ratio.

When I choose to ride brakeless I ride extremely cautiously, slowing down considerably at the tops of hills even when its a green light at the bottom and slowing down like 500 ft from a red light. I do have front brake that I plan on using with my new RB-021 setup, as soon as the levers get shipped.

Ha! What the **** is up with that brake nut?

Also - track drops, huge saddle-to bar drop with a Brooks B17 and that it's a Bianchi Pista are all things I don't like.

Yeah, aside from it looking like it _might_ get ridden for two miles at a stretch? No complaints.

i dont run brakeless anymore because not only does the environment dictate that i use a brake but its safer in general. Not only are you endangering yourself riding brakeless but youre endangering everybody around you. you go out of control, now cars and people are avoiding you or crashing or worse. get a brake dude. Just dont use it if you feel necessary. but it should be there.

Thanks for the comments folks. appreciate it. always looking to make improvements.

That saddle to bar drop.. has been uncomfortable from time to time... doing some further research on how to remedy it.

debating saddle positioning. May need to pull it back a bit but not sure TBH. Still "dialin' it in".

Also... talk to me about dem wheels. I may get rid of the DA - Open Pro wheelset. Too nice / theft prone for day to day riding, which was my main purpose for this guy.

All black rimz?
