One thing that I do to check to see if the bike was ever in a crash is to take the front wheel off and then put it back on. It should be seamless, if it take more force than normally, then there's a good chance the fork alignment is out of wack due to a crash. I almost bought a Cannondale, but didn't thankfully after it didn't pass this test.
Test ride the bike, if it feels funny to you handlingwise like if it tends to steer one direction, I'd be cautious. It could just be something simple like an overtightened headset, but it could also mean the frame or fork is out of alignment.
